What's New at Walt Disney World: Villains Land, Piston Peak and Monstropolis — Should You Wait?

No. That is the short answer, and it deserves saying up front, because the wave of announcements at D23 in August 2026 left a lot of families wondering. The major new lands unveiled — Villains Land, Piston Peak National Park, Monstropolis — will open between late 2027 and the start of the next decade. A six-year-old who waits will be eleven, and it will not be the same trip.

The real question is not whether to wait. It is what is closed while the work goes on, and nobody writes that part clearly. Here are both answers.

What Disney Announced in August 2026

D23 in 2026 delivered the biggest wave of projects for the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida in years. Five major construction sites across the four parks, plus a new resort.

Magic Kingdom Park: Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park

Villains Land will gather the Disney villains: a coaster devoted to Maleficent, a dark ride built around the Evil Queen, and the presence of Cruella de Vil and Dr. Facilier. No opening date has been confirmed.

Next door, Piston Peak National Park will drop the world of Cars into an American national park setting, with two announced attractions, Ridge Run Rally and Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spin-Along. Site preparation began in spring 2025. Serious industry estimates point to 2029.

The park will also see the Carousel of Progress return in a refreshed version, with the voices of Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston, announced for late spring 2027.

EPCOT: Spaceship Earth and the Return of the Dreamfinder

The park's great sphere will be entirely reimagined, a first in twenty years, around the theme of human connection. And Journey Into Imagination will bring back a restored Figment, along with the Dreamfinder character, gone for decades. That is the announcement longtime fans reacted to most. Neither has a confirmed date.

Disney's Hollywood Studios: Monstropolis

The land inspired by Monsters, Inc. was announced for 2027, with a door-vault coaster to follow later. Work began in summer 2025. Observers lean toward 2028.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park: Indiana Jones and Encanto

The Tropical Americas area will host Antonio's Fiesta de Encanto, with the film's original voices, and Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, whose audio-animatronic is modelled on Harrison Ford. Disney is also taking the opportunity to repair the Expedition Everest Yeti, motionless for years. Opening announced for late 2027.

Disney Lakeshore Lodge: The Only Firm Date

The new resort opens July 1, 2027, on the former River Country site along Bay Lake. It is the only date Disney has confirmed in this entire list. Everything else is announced, not dated.

What Is Closed in the Meantime

Here is the part the brochures do not lead with, and it is the part that affects your trip this year.

At Magic Kingdom Park, Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat have closed permanently to make room for the Cars area. They are not coming back. That was a pocket of shade and calm at the heart of the park, precious in mid-afternoon with young children.

At Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, DINOSAUR closed in February 2026 and the Dino-Rama section is gone. The park temporarily loses a meaningful share of its capacity, and you feel it in the queues for what remains.

At Disney's Hollywood Studios, the Muppets Courtyard has been closed since summer 2025.

Add it up: three of the four parks offer fewer attractions today than two years ago, at the same ticket price. That is not a reason to stay home, but it is a reason to plan differently.

So, Go Now or Wait?

Go now if your children are in the magic window, roughly four to ten. That window does not reopen. The characters, the belief, the awe in front of the castle: all of it has an expiry date that Disney's construction schedule does not respect.

Go now, too, if you have never been. A first trip to Walt Disney World still exceeds what most people picture, even with three fewer attractions. You will not miss what you never knew.

Wait if you were there recently and you are hunting for novelty. In that case 2028 will be a richer year than 2027, and a Disney Cruise Line sailing or a stay at Disneyland Paris will fill the gap.

Wait, as well, if crowds wear you down: fewer attractions open means more people in the ones that remain. A visit outside school breaks, in late January or late April, changes everything.

How to Plan Around the Construction

Three concrete adjustments for a 2026 or 2027 trip.

Add a day. With reduced capacity at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios, the four-day sprint no longer holds. Six or seven nights leave room for the unexpected and for afternoon naps.

Book Lightning Lane Multi Pass the moment your window opens. Guests at Disney hotels get seven days ahead for their whole stay; off-site guests get three, by which point the popular attractions are gone. With fewer attractions in the parks, that gap matters more than it used to.

Lean on the EPCOT festivals. They are untouched by the construction, they change four times a year, and they rescue afternoons. The late-summer Food & Wine Festival and December's Festival of the Holidays are each worth a park day on their own.

Advice from our Magic Makers

Treat Disney's announced dates for major projects with caution. They are not lies, they are targets, and recent history shows them slipping by a year, sometimes two. We have seen families move a trip eighteen months for an opening that did not arrive on time. Book for what is open on the days you are there; treat anything that opens in the meantime as a gift, never as the reason to go.

Frequently Asked Questions: What's New at Walt Disney World

When does Villains Land open at Magic Kingdom?

Disney has announced the project, but no opening date has been confirmed. Site preparation began in spring 2025, alongside the Cars area. For a build of this scale, industry observers point to the end of the decade. Until Disney announces a date, plan your trip without counting on it.

When does Piston Peak National Park, the Cars area, open?

Again, announced with no confirmed date. Work began in spring 2025 on the former Rivers of America site, and serious estimates land around 2029. What you will see on 2026 and 2027 trips is mostly construction walls and cranes.

What is currently closed at Walt Disney World?

Several things, and this is the part the brochures leave out. Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat closed permanently to make way for the Cars area. At Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, DINOSAUR closed in February 2026 and the Dino-Rama section is gone. At Disney's Hollywood Studios, the Muppets Courtyard has been closed since summer 2025. That is a real reduction in capacity, especially at peak times.

When does Disney Lakeshore Lodge open?

July 1, 2027. It is the only firm date on the entire list of recent announcements. The new resort rises on the former River Country site, on the shore of Bay Lake, a short shuttle ride from Magic Kingdom Park.

Should I wait for the new lands before visiting Walt Disney World?

No, unless your children are old enough to wait five years without the trip losing its meaning. The major projects announced at D23 in 2026 will open between late 2027 and the start of the next decade. Meanwhile four parks are running, the EPCOT festivals roll through the year and the nighttime spectaculars go on. A six-year-old who waits five years turns eleven, and it is no longer the same trip.

What is changing at EPCOT?

Two major overhauls have been announced. Spaceship Earth, the park's great sphere, will be entirely reimagined for the first time in twenty years, around the theme of human connection. Journey Into Imagination will bring back a restored Figment, along with the return of the Dreamfinder character, absent for decades. Neither has a confirmed opening date.

When does Monstropolis open at Disney's Hollywood Studios?

Disney announced the land for 2027, with its headline attraction to follow later. Work began in summer 2025, after the Muppets Courtyard closed. Industry observers lean toward 2028 for a full opening. As always with Disney construction, treat the announced date as a target, not a guarantee.
