Description
The boat slips between the lakes of Plitvice, sixteen turquoise basins spilling one into the next, linked by wooden walkways laid straight through the forest. It is the seventh day, and fourteen remain. This tour crosses four countries without ever feeling rushed.
Slovenia opens the route. Ljubljana, then Bled, where a traditional flat-bottomed boat called a pletna carries you to the island and its church. The Postojna cave is visited with an audio guide, through galleries water has been carving for millennia, and the Lipica stud farm still breeds Lipizzaner horses. Then Istria: the Roman amphitheatre of Pula, among the best preserved in the world, the coloured façades of Rovinj running down to the harbour, the perched village of Motovun above the truffle forests, and the Euphrasian Basilica of Porec, Byzantine and UNESCO-listed.
The Dalmatian coast takes over. Zadar and its Sea Organ, which turns waves into music. Pag Island, whose sheep's cheeses age in the salt wind. Trogir and its Venetian stone. Split, where Diocletian's Palace has become a city within the city, its cafés and apartments set into Roman walls. Hvar Island and its Spanish fortress. Korcula, said to be Marco Polo's birthplace, with its herringbone streets. At Mali Ston, the oysters are eaten on the boat, with homemade rakia.
Dubrovnik keeps four nights, one of them completely free. Ramparts, marble squares, and the Franciscan monastery pharmacy still serving after seven centuries. From there, a full day goes to Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor, where the cruise stops at the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks. Then Bosnia and Herzegovina: the bridge at Mostar, rebuilt after the war, and Sarajevo, where mosques, churches and synagogues share the same streets. Travnik for the ćevap, the waterfall at Jajce in the middle of town, and Zagreb to finish.
