Description
In the Cocora Valley, the wax palms rise so high you have to tip your head back to see their crowns, up to 80 metres above the pastures. It is Colombia's national tree, and a member of the association that protects it tells you its story. This 20-day tour, in a small group of 18 travellers, is part of La Collection and crosses the country from the Andes to the Caribbean Sea.
Bogotá opens the road with La Candelaria, the Gold Museum and the view from Monserrate. Then come the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, the colonial villages of Villa de Leyva and Barichara, then Medellín, where the Metrocable climbs to Comuna 13, its colourful stairways and murals. The Coffee Triangle, Salento and Filandia come before Cali, the salsa capital. Further south, white Popayán, the Misak people of Silvia and the stone statues of San Agustín, carved more than a thousand years ago.
The journey ends in Cartagena, among the ramparts, flower-filled balconies and the lanes of Getsemaní. Two domestic flights spare you the longest roads.
