Paying less for an all-inclusive from Quebec

The lever that pays most is not last-minute booking, it is the departure period. Shifting a trip from March break to late March, or from January to April, does more for the bill than every other trick combined. The second lever is when you book, and the third is which destination you choose.

Here are ten levers that genuinely work, and five mistakes that cost money without anyone noticing.

The ten levers, most effective first

1. Shift the departure period

By far the most powerful. The same room in the same hotel changes price entirely between the school break week and late March, or between 26 December and 8 December. If your calendar allows any choice, this is where it is decided.

The windows that give high-season conditions at low-season rates: late November, the first two weeks of December up to the 18th, and April outside Easter.

2. Book during the season launches

Tour operators here release their winter programmes in September and October, and that is when the best offers of the year appear for January to April departures. In other words, the best moment to buy is precisely the worst moment to travel.

3. Pick the destination from the budget rather than the reverse

The Dominican Republic offers the best beach-for-money ratio in the Caribbean, thanks to an enormous room inventory and strong competition between operators. On a tight budget it delivers the most.

4. Move the departure day by two or three days

Saturday is the peak day. Leaving on a Tuesday or Wednesday, or returning on a Thursday, often changes the price visibly for exactly the same stay.

5. Aim for an excellent four-star rather than an average five-star

Hotel classification is not harmonized across the Caribbean and Mexico, and some of the stars are assigned by the tour operator. A well-kept four-star, recently renovated, almost always gives a better week than a tired five-star, for less.

6. Compare operators, not only hotels

The same hotel, on the same dates, is sold by several operators on different terms. Inclusions vary too: private or shared transfers, baggage, seat selection, the room category actually assigned. It is tedious work to do alone and exactly what an adviser does in minutes.

7. Have the child discounts calculated

For a family this is the most variable item of all. Age policies and discounts change enormously between properties, to the point where two comparable hotels can produce very different bills for the same family.

8. Cut the peripheral costs

They add up without appearing in the package price: a week of airport parking, a hotel night before an early departure, extra baggage, seat selection. For a family outside the metropolitan area, flying from Quebec City rather than Montreal sometimes removes several of these at once.

9. Choose the room category with judgement

A garden view rebranded as "partial view" is not worth its supplement. A real sea view is, if you spend time on the balcony, and a premium section is if it gives access to a reserved restaurant and beach rather than a bottle of sparkling wine.

10. Lengthen the stay rather than shorten it

Counter-intuitive, and true. The flight is a large share of the package, and it costs the same for seven nights or ten. The marginal night is therefore cheaper than the average of the stay. For anyone with flexibility, ten or fourteen nights give better value than seven.

The five expensive mistakes

  1. Waiting for last minute in high season. The bet is almost always lost between December and March. At March break there is often nothing acceptable left, at any price.
  2. Choosing on price without looking at the beach. The cheapest package is sometimes cheapest because the hotel is separated from the sand by a road, or because its beach faces east during sargassum season.
  3. Cutting travel insurance. It is the riskiest saving there is. The Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec covers very little abroad, and a few days in hospital exceeds what most households can absorb.
  4. Forgetting the charges payable on site. Accommodation tax in some destinations, the Aruba sustainability fee to be paid before check-in, mandatory supplements for festive dinners.
  5. Comparing two packages without comparing their inclusions. Two identical prices can hide a shared transfer against a private one, two à la carte meals against unlimited, or a checked bag against none.

What does not work, whatever you read

Browsing in private mode. All-inclusive package prices are negotiated in blocks by the operators and do not depend on your cookies. It is a persistent myth carried over from the world of standalone flights.

Waiting for a drop after booking. It happens occasionally, and usually on the dates and hotels nobody wants. In high season the price rises as inventory empties.

Booking flight and hotel separately to save. That works in some cases, rarely for sun destinations, because the operator buys seats and rooms in blocks on terms an individual does not get.

What an adviser actually changes

The service costs nothing more than booking alone, which is the point most people miss. What it adds is time and information: a comparison of several operators against your real dates, access to season-launch offers before they go public, child discounts calculated property by property, and knowledge of which hotels are keeping their promise this year.
