A short hull assigned permanently to one basin

AmaCello is 110 metres long and carries 140 guests in 71 cabins. The line's ships working the Rhine and the Danube are 135 metres and carry 156 or 161. The gap is not a question of grade: the French network imposes it. The locks and bridges of the Saône and the Rhône do not accept the standard European length.

The ship stays on this basin all year. Our count on 26 August 2026 found 93 departure dates, built around Dijon, Lyon and Arles. A crew that runs the same route thirty times a season knows its berths and its lock schedules better than a ship passing through, and that shows in the hour you step ashore.

French balcony, not twin balcony

Settle this before choosing a cabin. The line's signature, the twin balcony, does not exist on this hull or on its three sisters. The upper cabins have a French balcony: a sliding glass wall with a railing, and no outdoor floor. You open it wide; you do not step out.

This is not a hidden fault, it is a generational choice. The 2008 and 2009 hulls were drawn before the twin balcony appeared in the fleet. On a narrow river where you run close to the bank, the difference is felt less than out in the width of the Rhine.

From Burgundy to Provence

The route comes down the Saône from Burgundy, passes Lyon, then follows the Rhône toward Avignon and Arles. Two rivers of opposite character: the Saône wide and slow, the Rhône faster, with deep locks. Running down takes less time than working back up, so two itineraries of the same length do not call at the same places depending on direction.

The other ships in the fleet

AmaDante and AmaDolce serve the Seine, AmaLyra the Bordeaux region. AmaKristina also works the Rhône, with a 135-metre hull and a twin balcony.

What is included, and the two things that are not

Included: accommodation, all meals, wine and beer at meals, soft drinks at any time, a daily cocktail, guided excursions at every port, Wi-Fi, and bicycles aboard the European ships.

Not included: gratuities and air travel. Gratuities are included on none of the line's destinations, not in Europe, not on the Mekong, not on the Nile, not in Colombia. The suggested amount changes from one destination to another; the rule does not. That is a real difference from several river lines in the same category, and it belongs in the budget from the start rather than being discovered at disembarkation.

The flight is booked separately or through the line's air programme. Your advisor will tell you what each arrangement covers.

The clientele aboard

Adult, with no youth programme and no childcare. Under-eighteens share a cabin with a responsible adult, and the minimum age changes by destination: stricter in Africa than in Europe. A family with young children will be better served elsewhere, and it is better to hear that now.

On access, the lift serves the main decks and stops short of the sun deck. Boarding gangways vary with the quay, and you sometimes cross a ship moored alongside to get ashore. Raise your mobility before booking rather than after.

The Quebec framework

Voyages AquaTerra holds a licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur. Your payments go into a trust account, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents covers the situations set out in the Travel Agents Act, including a supplier's failure. The cover has defined limits, best explained to you before you pay a deposit.

Allow a connection, often two on distant itineraries, and a hotel night before embarkation. That night is not a luxury: it is the margin that absorbs a delayed flight.
