A ship operated with a Portuguese partner

AmaDouro sails under the line's colours, but its operation is run in partnership with a Portuguese Douro operator. That is common on this river, where navigation rules and local permits favour established operators.

For the traveller it changes nothing about the product sold or your recourse if something goes wrong: your contract is with the agency and the line. It does explain why the deck crew is Portuguese and why knowledge of the river here is local rather than imported.

Seventy-nine metres

The hull came out of the WestSea yard at Viana do Castelo in 2019. It carries 102 guests in 51 cabins. As everywhere on the Douro, the size is dictated by the locks of the five dams that turn the river into a chain of reaches.

Our count on 26 August 2026 found 96 departure dates, almost all from Porto-Leixões. That is a fuller calendar than its elder on the same river.

What the Upper Douro gives

Listed schist terraces, quintas visited from the quays, and a river that narrows as you work up toward Spain. The valley roads climb fast and steep: a bicycle outing there calls for electric assistance and a bit of breath.

The other ships in the fleet

AmaVida and AmaSintra serve the same river. AmaDolce holds the Bordeaux region and AmaKristina the Rhône, two other countries of wine.

The line's formula

Meals included, wine and beer at meals included, soft drinks included, a daily cocktail included, guided excursions included at every port, Wi-Fi included, bicycles aboard the European ships.

Every outing carries an effort level announced in advance: gentle, regular or active. It is one of the better things this line does, because it lets two travellers in the same couple choose different paces on the same morning without one imposing their stride on the other.

Two exclusions to know: gratuities, which stay on your account everywhere, and air travel, unless it goes through the line's air programme. The line suggests a gratuity amount per destination; it does not add it to your bill automatically.

The everyday aboard

Adult clientele, with no youth programme and no childcare. Every traveller under eighteen shares a cabin with a responsible adult. The minimum age varies by destination and tightens on the African journeys.

A lift serves the main decks. The sun deck is reached by stair, which matters since that is where the river is best seen from. Boarding gangways vary with the quay, and some calls require crossing a neighbouring ship. Flag any mobility constraint when you book.

Booking here rather than elsewhere

Voyages AquaTerra is licensed by Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur. Money paid goes through a trust account and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents applies in the situations the law provides. That framework does not follow a booking made elsewhere.

A river cruise is built on logistics as much as on the choice of ship: flight, connection, a night on the ground, transfer to the pier. That is the part where a file comes apart when nobody is watching it.

A hundred and two guests in 51 cabins, on a 79-metre hull. The size is dictated by the locks of the five dams that engineer the river.
Our inventory measured 96 departure dates on 26 August 2026, almost all from Porto-Leixões, across 2026, 2027 and 2028. That is a fuller calendar than its elder on the same river.
At the WestSea yard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, in 2019. All three of the line's Douro ships come from the same yard.
Because five dams turn the river into a chain of reaches, and each lock imposes its dimensions. The tightest sets the limit for everyone.
Yes, with electric assistance and a bit of breath. The Upper Douro roads climb fast and steep between the schist terraces, which is nothing like a riverside stroll.
Yes, from the quays. Several Upper Douro calls are a walk rather than a coach transfer, which stays rare on European rivers.
No imposed charge. Gratuities, however, are included on none of the line's destinations, and the suggested amount adds to your budget.
No. With gratuities, it is the only other notable exclusion. Everything else, meals, drinks at meals, excursions and Wi-Fi, is part of the fare.
The broad lines are at booking; the detail for the next day is given aboard the evening before. The effort levels appear there, which lets you choose the night before rather than on the morning.
No. It tightens markedly on the African journeys, where landing conditions require it. Have it confirmed for your precise destination rather than relying on a general rule.
Say so when booking and repeat it to the crew on the first day. A well-placed cabin and a well-chosen deck change a cruise week considerably.
Spring for the green valley and long days, September for the harvest and the work under way in the quintas. In winter the programme thins out noticeably.
Yes, and it matters: the Compensation Fund does not cover cancellation for personal reasons, trip interruption or medical costs abroad. They are two distinct protections.
