    Aqua Mare: sixteen guests in the Galápagos, on an Italian hull from 1998

    Aqua Mare works the Galápagos out of Santa Cruz Island, on eastern and western itineraries. We carry no departure on this boat at the moment; that is measured, and your advisor can look for one with the line.

    A hull with two lives

    She came out in 1998 from Italam 86 and the CRN yard, at Ancona. She carried the names Pestifer, then ITALAM 114, before a 2021 refit sent her to the Galápagos in Aqua colours. Fifty metres by nine, four decks, seven cabins including the owner's suite, sixteen guests and sixteen crew.

    Sixteen people, and what that changes

    The Galápagos national park caps the number of visitors per site and per time slot. A sixteen-guest boat takes a place where a hundred-guest hull waits its turn, and lands everyone at once instead of in three waves. In return the format is that of a private house: no parallel programme, no choice of table, and company you do not leave all week. It suits someone who comes for the archipelago very well, and someone who comes for the ship rather less.

    The house changed hands

    Ponant Explorations Group took a majority stake in Aqua Expeditions on 17 January 2025. The brand continues under its own name and its founder remains at its head. Ponant has been part of the same group since that date.

    The other boats in the fleet

    Aqua Lares is the other sea-going hull, twice as long. Aqua Nera and Aria Amazon work the Peruvian Amazon, in an entirely different register.

    The line sells fares described as all-inclusive, but we have not measured what they cover boat by boat and we will not assert it here. Ask your advisor for the written list before booking: it is the only answer that protects you.
    Aqua Expeditions guides work in English. If French matters to you, say so to your advisor before booking: some lines charter these same boats with French-speaking guiding and others do not, and it has to be checked departure by departure.
    Not yet. The address answers, but it is served by a generic template that shows every ship on the site instead of this house's six. We measured it and reported it; meanwhile the boat pages point to one another.
    Your agency, and it alone. Voyages AquaTerra operates under a licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur, your payments pass through a trust account, and the compensation fund for travel agency clients covers your departure.
    Both words apply and neither says everything. There are cabins, service and sit-down meals, as on a cruise. There are also daily outings in small craft, hours set by light and water rather than by a programme, and cancellations for reasons of nature. If you need a fixed schedule, this is not the right trip.
