The World’s Great Festivals: the 2027 Calendar, and the Date Traps

A festival trip almost always goes wrong the same way: you book for an edition that is not happening. Glastonbury had no 2026 edition, a fallow year announced by the organizers. Dieppe’s kite festival is biennial and skips odd years, so there is none in 2027. And the 2027 Kumbh Mela is not in Prayagraj, as you read everywhere, but in Nashik.

Here are the real dates, verified at official sources in September 2026, and what to know before you block a flight.

The 2027 calendar

Three date traps

Fallow years. Glastonbury rests the field roughly one year in five. No announcement circulates in search results, only on the festival’s own site. Always check the year, not just the month.

Biennials. Dieppe’s kite festival takes place in even years. Several European festivals work this way, and nothing in their name says so.

Moveable feasts. Diwali, Holi, Holy Week, the lunar new year and the Kumbh follow lunar or liturgical calendars: their dates shift by weeks from year to year. One frequent error is worth correcting: carnival precedes Lent, so it falls six weeks before Good Friday, not during it.

Rio Carnival

Two carnivals coexist. The sambadrome, that seven-hundred-metre parade corridor designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1984, where the twelve Grupo Especial schools parade six a night across two nights. And the blocos de rua, the free neighbourhood street bands that draw hundreds of thousands, from Cordão da Bola Preta to Monobloco.

The best of the three moments, though, is the third: the rehearsals in the quadras, the samba schools’ own halls, in the weeks beforehand. You get in for almost nothing and you watch the work rather than the result.

Stay in Santa Teresa or Flamengo, never Barra da Tijuca, which is too far. The metro runs continuously during carnival. And one safety point is worth repeating verbatim from the Government of Canada advisory: tourists have died after entering a favela while following their navigation app. Complexo da Maré and Complexo da Penha are under “avoid all travel”. Do not follow your GPS blindly in Rio.

Oktoberfest

It began with the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810, which explains the name of the grounds: the Theresienwiese. Today: sixteen days, fourteen large tents, between six and seven million visitors and close to seven and a half million litres of beer.

The tents are not equal. The Augustiner-Festhalle is the Munich favourite: no amplified music, beer served from wooden barrels. The Hofbräu-Festzelt is the most international, and therefore the loudest. Only six breweries may serve: Paulaner, Augustiner, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Spaten and Hacker-Pschorr.

Two practical points. Opening is at 10 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends and holidays; turn up fifteen minutes early if you have no reservation. And the funfair around the tents, with its giant jute-sack slide, is the part tourists forget and Munich families come for.

Diwali, and the Nashik Kumbh

In Varanasi, Diwali is lived from the water. You hire a boat in late afternoon, move up the ghats during the aarti, and watch thousands of diyas, those clay oil lamps, drift down the Ganges. Jaipur offers a more organized version, with whole districts illuminated in competition.

The Kumbh Mela follows an astronomical cycle and rotates between four cities: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. The edition currently open is the Simhastha at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar, from 31 October 2026 to 24 July 2027. It is the largest human gathering on the planet, and the royal bathing days concentrate crowds of a density hard to picture.

One reassuring clarification: the Government of Canada recommends avoiding all travel to Jammu and Kashmir and to the border areas with Pakistan. Varanasi, Nashik, Jaipur, Mathura and Delhi are not covered by those regional warnings, even though the country as a whole sits at the high degree of caution level.

Día de Muertos, three versions

Oaxaca is the version you imagine: ofrendas in the houses, orange cempasúchil, the smell of copal, the vigils in the cemeteries of nearby villages such as San Pablo Villa de Mitla and Atzompa.

Pátzcuaro, in Michoacán, offers the Purépecha night ceremonies by the lake, more intimate and older. One important point: the Government of Canada recommends avoiding non-essential travel to Michoacán, but its advisory explicitly excludes Morelia and Pátzcuaro. That is the nuance that lets you go with your eyes open.

Mexico City offers something else: a large parade, created in 2016 to reproduce the opening scene of a James Bond film shot the year before. It is spectacular, it is recent, and it is not a tradition. Worth knowing before you choose.

How far ahead to book

Twelve months for Glastonbury, whose tickets go in minutes, for Oktoberfest if you want a reserved table in a tent, and for the palace balls at the Venice Carnival. Nine to twelve months for Rio, Seville’s Holy Week and San Fermín, where it is hotels rather than tickets that run out. Six months for most of the rest. And for the Kumbh, book accommodation before anything else: the host city doubles in population.

One rule across all of them: buy cancellation insurance on the day of the first deposit. On a trip booked twelve months out, that is twelve months of the unexpected covered.

What Quebec already has

Before crossing an ocean for a carnival, it is worth remembering that the Carnaval de Québec is the largest winter carnival in the world, and that Igloofest, Montréal en Lumière and Nuit blanche occupy exactly the place Lyon’s Festival of Lights holds. The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal is the counterpart to Montreux, Osheaga and the Festival d’été de Québec to Glastonbury, the Montreal Fringe and Just for Laughs to Edinburgh, Carifiesta and Nuits d’Afrique to Notting Hill.

This is not an argument for staying home. It is an argument for choosing: cross the ocean for what exists nowhere else, Seville’s Holy Week, the Kumbh, the Gilles of Binche.

The Quebec school calendar, and what it allows

For a family, two windows only. The early March break, which falls just before Holi and Seville’s Holy Week, both in the week of 21 March 2027: a few negotiated days of absence are enough to catch them. And summer, by far the richest, with Midsommar, Glastonbury, San Fermín, the Fringe, La Tomatina and Notting Hill between late June and late August.
