An Original Honeymoon: Twelve Destinations Where the Hotel Does Not Yet Know the Script

The Maldives, Bali and Santorini are beautiful. The problem is not the beauty, it is the standardization: petals on the bed, dinner on the beach with the photographer passing at 7 p.m., and six other couples going home with the same photographs.

Here are twelve destinations where the trip is still yours, each with the Government of Canada’s official advisory, because a honeymoon is not the moment to discover that an insurance policy no longer applies.

The list

The Azores, our first recommendation

It is the only destination on this list that combines a nonstop flight from Montreal, an advisory at the lowest level, and a landscape nobody will recognize in your photographs.

What you do there: watch sperm whales off São Miguel, above an undersea canyon where they dive hundreds of metres; bathe at Furnas in geothermal pools cut into the lava, at thirty-eight degrees, in the middle of a botanical garden; watch the sun rise over the Sete Cidades caldera with its two lakes, one green, one blue.

What changes everything is the accommodation: the quintas, historic farm estates turned into guest houses, often fewer than ten rooms, sometimes with their own hot spring. Nothing like a resort. Our Azores guide from Quebec covers the islands and the seasons.

Japan, in a ryokan

A ryokan is not a Japanese hotel. It is a traditional inn where you sleep on tatami, move around in a yukata, eat a ten to twelve course kaiseki served in your room by a nakai, the kimono-clad hostess, and bathe in an onsen fed by a hot spring.

The detail that matters for a couple: the kashikiri onsen, a bath that can be booked privately by the hour. It turns a communal experience into a moment for two, and it is reserved on arrival.

The Tawaraya in Kyoto, founded in 1709, is the most renowned in the country and books six to twelve months ahead. The Gora Kadan in Hakone occupies a former imperial villa. For seasons, aim for the cherry blossom from late March to mid-April, or the red maples from mid-November to early December. Those are also the two periods that fill up earliest.

Patagonia

The granite towers of the Paine massif rise from the steppe at two thousand eight hundred metres. The Perito Moreno glacier presents a front several kilometres wide that cracks and collapses into the lake while you watch.

One correction is needed here, because it circulates everywhere: the Perito Moreno was long described as one of the few glaciers in the world still advancing. That is no longer true. Work published in 2025 documents its retreat after decades of stability. The spectacle is intact; the argument has changed.

The season runs from November to March. October and November, then March and April, offer the best conditions with fewer people. On advisories, Chile sits at the high degree of caution level and Argentina at the normal level with regional warnings that cover neither Torres del Paine nor El Calafate.

Slovenia, and Lake Bled

An island in the middle of a lake, a seventeenth-century church on it, a castle perched on a cliff a hundred and thirty metres high, and the Julian Alps behind. You reach the island by pletna, the traditional rowed boat whose licence passes from father to son. Tradition holds that ringing the church bell three times grants a wish.

The country has two million inhabitants and can be crossed in three hours. Add the Postojna caves and Ljubljana, one of the loveliest small capitals in Europe, and you have a ten-day trip by pairing it with Venice, an hour and a half away by road.

Two practical details for a couple with a car: the motorway vignette is mandatory, and winter tyres are required from 15 November to 15 March.

Sri Lanka

The train from Kandy to Ella crosses the highland tea plantations in about seven hours, doors open. It is one of the great rail journeys in the world and it costs almost nothing.

Add the rock of Sigiriya, the cave temples of Dambulla, the elephants of Udawalawe National Park, then the southern beaches at Mirissa and Tangalle. The seasons split: December to April for the south and west, July and August for the east coast.

Two administrative points: the Government of Canada recommends a high degree of caution, and an electronic travel authorization must be obtained online before departure.

Destinations under advisory, and what that does to your insurance

Three destinations often recommended for honeymoons are subject, as of September 2026, to a Government of Canada advisory against non-essential travel: Jordan, Oman and Ethiopia. In Ethiopia’s case, the Lalibela region is even under “avoid all travel”.

Here is why that is not a detail. If an advisory at that level already existed when you bought your policy, claims tied to the reason for that advisory can be refused, in whole or in part. In other words, you leave without the safety net you believe you paid for. If the advisory appears after your booking and after the policy purchase, most insurers maintain coverage.

Two verified points along the way, because they are wrong almost everywhere else: Petra by Night runs five evenings a week, Sunday through Thursday, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., it is lit by roughly two thousand candles, and it also requires a daytime entry ticket or the Jordan Pass.

When to book, and in what order

Nine to twelve months before the wedding for an ordinary trip. Twelve to eighteen months for a renowned ryokan, a luxury camp in Patagonia or a Serengeti lodge, which fill more than a year ahead.

And above all, in this order: decide on the atmosphere you want first, then the region, only then specific addresses. Couples who start from a hotel they saw online end up building a trip around a bedroom.

Three pieces of advice that cost nothing. Leave two to four weeks after the wedding rather than the next morning: nobody enjoys a honeymoon in sleep debt. Tell every hotel it is a honeymoon; the mention almost always triggers something free. And book a table at a good restaurant for the first and last evening, because those are the two meals you will remember.

The seventy-thirty rule

On a honeymoon, put roughly seventy per cent of the budget into accommodation and thirty into activities. It is the reverse of an ordinary trip, and it is justified: what you will remember in ten years is not Tuesday’s excursion, it is Wednesday’s waking up.

For destinations with thin medical coverage, Mongolia, southern Patagonia and remote islands, require explicit medical evacuation coverage from your insurer. It is not optional on those routes.
