The world's last ship still at sea, in spring 2020

The Costa Deliziosa left Venice on 5 January 2020 for a world cruise, with about two thousand travellers aboard. When the world's ports closed, she kept going. She sailed more than a month without a call after leaving Australia in mid-March. The last travellers stepped ashore in Genoa on 24 April 2020.

The rest has to be said exactly, because two files are often confused. No case of illness was confirmed aboard during that voyage, while another ship of the same line went through a heavy health episode that same season. The captain summed it up by saying the ship had proved the safest place to be.

The best ratio in the fleet, and nobody says it

Delivered in January 2010, 292 metres, 1130 cabins, 2260 travellers at double occupancy. Here is the fact the line puts nowhere forward: about two thirds of the cabins have a balcony or a veranda. That is by far the best ratio in the whole Costa fleet.

Twenty-three adapted cabins are listed by third-party databases, an indicative figure. Last refit in 2018, then a world cruise departing in November 2026.

The other ships in the fleet

The Costa Toscana and the Costa Diadema are larger and newer. The Costa Favolosa covers the fjords and the Caribbean. The Costa Smeralda is the liquefied natural gas ship.

What to know about the line

Costa lost half its fleet between 2019 and 2026: from sixteen hulls to eight. Seven were sold or transferred, one was scrapped. Nine of our seventeen pages therefore describe a ship that has changed name, flag and company, or that no longer exists at all.

The house is a hundred and seventy years old. Genoese, founded in olive oil in 1854, a shipowner since 1924, a carrier of passengers since 1947. It has belonged to an American group since 2000 and counts among its nine cruise brands. Three of its ships have been transferred in recent years to the group's North American brand.

On the Costa Concordia wreck, the facts without the novel. On 13 January 2012, off the island of Giglio, 4252 people aboard, 33 dead including a salvage diver, the captain sentenced to sixteen years and the company fined after pleading guilty. The muster drill before sailing, compulsory everywhere today, follows directly from it.

What is included, and what is not

The fare covers the cabin, meals in the main restaurants and the buffet, evening shows, daytime entertainment, the children's club and port taxes. It covers neither the flight, nor insurance, nor drinks outside meals, nor excursions, nor speciality restaurants.

On the hotel service charge, let us be exact: it is mandatory under the contract, debited automatically to the onboard account each day, and adjustable on request at the front desk during the cruise only. It is neither a free gratuity nor an inclusion.

An advisor's remark on excursions. The catalogue runs past two thousand options, which is a real strength on itineraries with a daily call. It is also the item that most often derails a budget, because nobody goes ashore empty-handed seven days running.

What life aboard asks

The rhythm is that of a cruise with a call every day: you get up early, spend the day ashore, come back for dinner. Entertainment starts after the meal and runs late. A traveller who dines at six will find doors closed, and one looking for afternoon activities will find the ship quiet.

The clientele is mostly European and often Italian, with more North Americans on Caribbean and South American itineraries. Announcements run through several languages in turn. Tolerance of smoking is wider than in North America. These are facts, not faults: but a client who does not know them will experience them as faults.

On accessibility, the line publishes no official table of adapted cabins by ship. The numbers quoted here come from third-party databases derived from deck plans; they are indicative and carry no guarantee. Have the cabin validated with the line before paying a deposit.

Arranging this trip from Montreal

The flight is booked separately. Plan a night on site before embarkation, and keep the return day free: an early disembarkation and a tight connection sit badly together. Mediterranean ports are often reached non-stop from Montreal for part of the year; the others need a connection.

The contract of passage provides for Italian law and the courts of Genoa, exclusively. The carrier is an Italian company; the North American entity is its sales agent and not the carrier. The Athens Convention, invoked in the contract, caps liability for personal injury.

Nothing establishes that this line holds a Quebec travel agent's licence. Your protection comes from the licensed agency: Voyages AquaTerra deposits your payments in a trust account and your file falls under the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents.

Frequently Asked Questions

She left Venice on 5 January 2020 for a world cruise and sailed more than a month without a call after leaving Australia. The last travellers stepped ashore in Genoa on 24 April 2020. No case of illness was confirmed aboard.
No, and it matters. Another ship of the same line went through a heavy episode that season, with closed ports and a death among travellers landed earlier. They are two distinct files, and this is the reassuring one.
About two thirds have one, and only sixteen per cent of the cabins are inside. That is the best ratio in the whole Costa fleet, and the line puts it nowhere forward.
Two thousand two hundred and sixty at double occupancy, in 1130 cabins. The maximum capacity the line publishes is higher because it counts third and fourth berths.
She was delivered in January 2010. She measures 292 metres, has twelve decks, and her last refit dates from 2018. She is a panamax format, narrower than the fleet's recent large ships.
Four sail today for an American company whose fleet consists entirely of former Costa ships. Two went to the Chinese market, one to a British company, one was scrapped in Turkey.
You can ask for it to be adjusted at the front desk, but only during the cruise. Once you have disembarked the amount is final and no change is possible. You have to act aboard.
Only when they are part of the package purchased. Otherwise they are booked separately, like the flight. We build the whole thing into one file so an air delay does not become a missed embarkation.
The Mediterranean in summer, on seven- and fourteen-night cruises out of Venice and Athens, then a world cruise departing in November 2026 with segments to San Francisco, Sydney and Hong Kong.
The line publishes no official table of adapted cabins, ship by ship. The circulating numbers come from third-party databases derived from deck plans: indicative and never contractual. Have the cabin validated before paying a deposit.
A company under Italian law. The North American entity selling in North America is only its sales and marketing agent: it is not the carrier under the contract of passage.
European and often Italian. Announcements run through several languages in turn, the evening buffet opens on European hours, tolerance of smoking is wider than here and the daytime programme is thin.
Yes, the route splits into segments booked separately. It is the most approachable formula for a first long voyage, and it avoids committing to four months at once.
Twenty-three according to third-party databases derived from deck plans. The figure is indicative and not contractual, the line publishing no official table. Have the cabin validated before a deposit.
For the trust account and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents, neither of which follows a booking made elsewhere. And to have someone answer when a connection collapses the night before departure.
