Northern Lights in Iceland
Most travel experiences can be anticipated. You have seen the photographs, you know roughly what to expect. The northern lights defeat that preparation, because they move, because they arrive without warning in a sky that was black a minute earlier, and because they are silent. When they fade, you stand there in the cold staring upward, hoping they come back.
Iceland is not the only place to see them, but it is the most practical from Quebec: a direct flight of under seven hours from Montreal, roads that stay driveable in winter, and a country worth the trip even on the nights nothing happens. Is 2026 a good year for auroras?
Yes, though not for the reason usually given. The maximum of solar cycle 25 is behind us: we are in the declining phase. That does not mean the show is over — quite the opposite.
In the declining phase, coronal holes take over from the great eruptions. These are regions where the Sun's magnetic field opens and lets fast solar wind escape. Because the Sun rotates roughly every twenty-seven days, those holes sweep past Earth at regular intervals. Activity becomes more moderate but distinctly more predictable — which, for anyone booking flights three months ahead, beats an unpredictable peak.
There is a second, counter-intuitive point: in odd-numbered cycles like the twenty-fifth, the most extreme geomagnetic storms often occur after maximum, one to two years before minimum. The declining phase is not a consolation prize. It is sometimes the best moment.
Which index should you watch?
The Kp, which measures geomagnetic activity from 0 to 9. At Icelandic latitudes, between 64 and 66 degrees north, an aurora is visible from Kp 2 or 3 in a clear sky: a pale green band to the north. At Kp 4 the curtains start to move and sometimes take on pink tones. At Kp 5 and above you get coronas and spirals — what the photographs show.
The decisive variable, though, is not the Kp. It is cloud cover. A Kp 6 night under a solid deck gives you nothing; a Kp 2 night under a perfectly clear sky gives you a fine show. The Icelandic Met Office publishes a cloud map by region: that is what you check first, and what decides which direction you drive that evening.
When should you go?
The useful season runs from late September to late March, when nights are long enough and dark enough. December and January give the longest nights but also the least stable weather and the hardest roads.
The two best windows sit around the equinoxes, late September and late March. The orientation of Earth's magnetic field relative to the solar wind is more favourable then, and geomagnetic activity is statistically stronger than at midwinter. As a bonus, September and March weather is kinder than January's, and the northern roads stay open.
Where should you go?
The useful rule is simple: get at least thirty kilometres out of Reykjavik to escape light pollution. It is not a question of latitude — the whole of Iceland sits under the auroral oval — but of darkness.
For a first attempt without a car, Grótta beach at the tip of Seltjarnarnes is reachable by city bus from central Reykjavik and dark enough. With a vehicle, Thingvellir National Park, the Snæfellsnes peninsula and the Lake Mývatn area in the north offer foregrounds that turn a photograph of the sky into a photograph of a landscape.
How do you photograph them?
A tripod is essential, as is a fast lens — a wide angle opening at f/2.8 or better. Work in manual: focus set to infinity in daylight or on a bright star using digital zoom, aperture wide open, ISO between 1600 and 3200, and an exposure of two to ten seconds depending on intensity. The faster the aurora moves, the shorter the exposure must be, or the curtains dissolve into green fog.
Carry spare batteries warm against your body: the cold drains them in a fraction of the usual time.
What the photographs do not show
This needs saying plainly, because the disappointment is common. A camera sensor accumulates light over several seconds; the human eye does not. A faint aurora that reads bright green on the screen often looks to the naked eye like a greyish band, something close to a moonlit cloud. Only from around Kp 4 or 5 does the colour become frankly visible without a camera.
None of which takes anything away. The movement is the part no photograph captures.
How should you dress?
You stand still outdoors for hours, often in wind: it is more demanding than a day of skiing. Three layers, with a merino or synthetic base — never cotton, which holds moisture. Warm boots with a thick sole, because the cold comes up from the ground. Mittens over thin gloves, so you can work the camera without fully uncovering. A hat and a neck gaiter. And a headlamp with a red mode, which preserves night vision.
