On the shore of Swindle Island, in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest on the central coast of British Columbia. It is the largest intact rainforest of its kind in the world.
The Kitasoo Xai'xais Nation, formed in the 19th century by the coming together of two distinct peoples: the Kitasoo from the islands and the Xai'xais from the mainland. A few hundred people live from fishing, aquaculture and tourism developed on their own terms.
The visit to the Big House with community guides is the heart of the call: origin stories, songs and dances shared around the central fire. A Zodiac outing along the shores rounds out the day.
The community's ceremonial house at the water's edge: a monumental cedar frame decorated with traditional designs. Local carvers maintain the poles and painted facades, and you may see them working cedar a few steps away.
The Kermode bear, as the coastal nations call it. It is neither an albino nor a separate species, but a black bear carrying a recessive gene that turns its coat white. It lives in the forests around Klemtu.
It is possible but far from guaranteed. The community runs Spirit Bear Lodge and guides watchers to the estuaries where the bear fishes for salmon in late summer. Depending on season and call length, some expeditions offer these outings.
Bald eagles perched in the spruce, curious seals, otters, and sometimes humpback whales whose blows echo through the passes. At low tide the shoreline reveals sea stars and barnacles.
Waterproof clothing and closed shoes: rain is what keeps these woods alive, and the forest runs right down to the tideline, draped in moss. This is a coast where you do not count on fine weather.
Very few. There are no chain souvenir shops and no guaranteed mobile signal. Cultural visits are led by Kitasoo Xai'xais guides, and their instructions take precedence everywhere.
