Frequently Asked Questions
By zodiac. The coastal waters are too shallow for ships' hulls. Bring waterproof boots: the landing depends on sea conditions.
North of the tree line, where the Mackenzie River delta dissolves into the Arctic Ocean, in the Northwest Territories. The hamlet has fewer than a thousand residents, the great majority Inuvialuit.
An ice-cored mound formed by the freezing of the ground, a phenomenon particular to permafrost regions. The Tuktoyaktuk peninsula holds about 1,350 of them, close to a quarter of all the pingos on the planet. The largest, Ibyuk, rises nearly 50 metres and has been growing for over a thousand years.
The village is easily walked: houses on pilings above the permafrost, fish drying racks, a reconstructed sod house showing how Inuvialuit families once lived, and the schooner Our Lady of Lourdes, which once supplied the missions along this coast.
Visits are arranged with the community: drum dance demonstrations, hunting stories, tastings of smoked or dried fish prepared by methods handed down through generations. Artisans offer mitts, carvings and traditional clothing, and every purchase supports families directly.

Yes, since 2017 a gravel road links Tuk to Inuvik. It is the only place in the country where you can drive to the Arctic Ocean.
Very few: a couple of basic stores, no bank and no reliable cell coverage. Bring cash and expect nothing from the hamlet beyond what it already offers, which is a great deal.
