No, no spectacular monument awaits, and that is precisely the point of the stop. What you find is a Rhône village still living to the rhythm of its river and its vines, far from the marked routes of neighbouring Provence.
A tasting in a cellar, a short walk between the rows of vines for the valley view, and a pause on a bench by the water. A circuit of the village takes an unhurried hour. The spectacle here is the Rhône itself.
The village sits at the heart of the Gard Côtes du Rhône vineyard. Several growers open their cellars for structured reds, food-friendly whites and thirst-quenching rosés. Blunt summers and mistral-swept winters produce generous wines.
For centuries residents lived from the water more than the land. As early as 1535, deeds record the sale of port and toll rights collected here on convoys carrying salt, wine and goods down to the Mediterranean. Local men worked as ferrymen aboard barcots, flat-bottomed craft built for an untamed current.
Mooring rings set into the stone, facades turned toward the water, and the instinctive respect residents keep for the river even now that modern works have calmed it. Nothing museum-like: you sense it walking the bank.
Very little: a bakery and the wine cellars, on southern French hours. Plan around the midday closure, when everything shuts. Bring cash, as a card terminal is not guaranteed with small producers.
The euro and French. In a village this size nobody expects foreign visitors, and English is rare.
Late afternoon, when the low light catches the opposite bank. It is the ideal moment for photographs, from the shore or from the first rise among the vines.
A windbreaker. The mistral can blow hard on the quay and makes the walk far less pleasant without protection. Otherwise good shoes are enough: the paths between the vines are simple but uneven.
