In the harbour basin, not far from the centre, reachable on foot or by a short shuttle. The town climbs the hills around its bay and the streets run naturally down to the water.
The northernmost beech forest in the world, and the largest in Norway, sitting just above the rooftops. A path climbs to it from the centre, and marked loops of 2.6 to 10 km wind under the canopy, used by runners and strollers alike.

The barracks and ramparts of Fredriksvern, Norway's first major naval base, laid out from 1750. Today art galleries and cafes fill the yellow officers' buildings, and a coastal path threads between the polished rocks. The round trip is by excursion or taxi.
The Kon-Tiki adventurer was born in the region, which is fitting in a town of shipyards and long crossings. The museum's maritime collections carry that same pull of the open sea.
Yes. The short Bokeskogen loops are stroller-friendly, and the polished rocks at Stavern welcome swimmers in summer, towels spread straight on the stone. Distances stay moderate in both cases.

Spring and summer. In spring the new beech leaves filter a green light the locals speak of with undisguised pride; in summer the waterfront terraces and the flat rocks at Stavern take over.
