Yes. Built in the 14th century, it is climbed by a spiral staircase of forty steps. From the top the view reaches over the domes, the steppe and the broad ribbon of the Volga. The stairwell is narrow — skip it if you are claustrophobic.
A modern mosque on the edge of the ancient site, its pale colonnades and minarets mirrored in a reflecting pool. It is calm and quiet outside prayer times. Respectful dress is expected, as in any place of worship.
Tea and Tatar pastries at the visitor pavilions. Chak-chak, a honey-and-fried-dough sweet, is the one to try. The offering stays simple: this is an archaeological site, not a restaurant town.
The Russian rouble; both Russian and Tatar are spoken in Tatarstan. Bring cash, as foreign-issued cards cannot be relied on and the site is rural. English is very rarely spoken here.
May through September, the Volga navigation season. Low morning or evening light shows the pale stone at its best. In high summer the plateau is hot and exposed: water, hat and sunscreen are not optional.
