At a simple wooden landing on the Sheksna River, in the Vologda region. Kuzino is a village of a few wooden houses and kitchen gardens: there is no terminal, no shops and no tourist infrastructure.
Only for what the village gives access to: the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, a short drive away. Kuzino sits on the Volga–Baltic waterway used by ships linking Moscow and St Petersburg.
The excursion to the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery fills the half-day. Some options push on to Ferapontovo, about twenty kilometres further, for the Dionisy frescoes. The village itself takes a few minutes to cross.
Yes. The monastery is a short drive from the quay, on the shore of Lake Siverskoye; Ferapontovo is about twenty kilometres away. None of it is reachable on foot from the landing.
A fortress monastery founded in 1397 by the monk Cyril, who left Moscow seeking the solitude of the great forests. Over the centuries the hermitage became one of the richest and largest in the country, protected by a stone wall whose towers suggest a citadel.
Domed cathedrals, chapels, cellars and monastic buildings spread across several courtyards. The Cathedral of the Dormition holds a set of old icons, and a museum displays liturgical embroidery, manuscripts and everyday monastic objects.
Barely any. The community largely left in the 20th century, when the complex became a museum. So you are visiting a heritage site rather than a living monastery — a distinction worth knowing before you go.

May through September, the Volga–Baltic navigation season. The northern summer is short; the village is only in flower and the forests only green during those few months. Bring repellent: mosquitoes are very present in June and July.
