At one of the largest river landing stages in the country, in the middle of the 62nd Army Embankment, named for the unit that defended this bank. A monumental colonnaded staircase leads from the quay up to the upper terrace and the city centre.
Partly. The embankment, the Friendship Fountain, the Battle of Stalingrad panorama museum and the ruins of the Gerhardt Mill are all walkable from the landing. Mamayev Kurgan, however, is several kilometres upstream: fast tram or taxi.
The Motherland Calls, standing on Mamayev Kurgan hill: over 80 metres, a steel blade raised to the sky. It was the tallest statue in the world when completed, and you can pick it out from the ship's deck long before the quays.
Mamayev Kurgan first, by tram or taxi, then walk back to the Battle of Stalingrad panorama museum and the Gerhardt Mill, both on the embankment. It is a full program but a realistic one.
A memorial you climb by a staircase of two hundred steps, one for each day of the battle. The ascent passes through successive plazas, among colossal sculptures and ruin-walls carrying recorded voices, up to the Hall of Military Glory where a guard watches over the flame.
Deliberately, as a witness to the battle: shredded brick, floors torn open, nothing rebuilt. Few monuments state war with that bare force. The building stands next to the panorama museum on the upper terrace.
Tsaritsyn at its founding, Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961, Volgograd since. Each name marks a political era, and it was as Stalingrad that the city entered world history.
It can be. Everything revolves around a battle fought house by house, and the memorial makes no attempt to soften it. Leave time on the riverside promenade afterwards: the city also cultivates the gentleness of its river.
May, June and September. Steppe summers are scorching and the Mamayev Kurgan staircase is climbed in full sun, with no shade. A hat and water are essential in July and August.
