Eighty metres, because the Douro locks accept no more

The Portuguese Douro is a fully engineered river. Five dams turn it into a chain of reaches, and each imposes its lock dimensions. The tightest sets the limit: about 83 metres in length. Any ship that means to work up to the Spanish border must come in under that measure.

Scenic Azure is 80 metres long and carries 96 guests in 48 suites. It is not a small ship by aesthetic choice: that is the maximum size the river tolerates. The Carrapatelo lock, the deepest in Europe, drops some sixty metres in a single operation, and the experience is worth living from the deck rather than being told about.

The wine river

The schist terraces of the Upper Douro valley have produced port for centuries, and the landscape was listed for that reason. The quintas are visited from the quays, and several calls are a walk rather than a coach transfer.

The season matters. In spring the valley is green and the days are long. In September the harvest gives the calls a different content, with work under way in the quintas. In winter the programme thins out.

A very full calendar

Our inventory measured 365 departure dates on 26 August 2026, the second fullest in the fleet. Almost every route starts from Lisbon or Porto and combines a land portion with the cruise itself, which explains the length of the published journeys.

The hull came out of the WestSEA yard at Viana do Castelo, Portugal, in 2016. It is the line's only river ship built outside the Netherlands, and it was designed for this river and no other.

The other ships in the fleet

Scenic Diamond holds the Bordeaux region, Scenic Sapphire the Rhône and the Saône, Scenic Gem the Seine. Scenic Spirit sails the Mekong under a comparable size constraint.

The fare, line by line

Gratuities are included. That is the first difference noticed by travellers used to lines where the end-of-cruise envelope is part of the ritual. Here nothing is added to your bill on that account, not for the crew, not for the guides, not for the drivers.

Meals are included, with the wines and standard spirits served at table. Wi-Fi is included. Every suite has a butler. Freechoice excursions give you a choice at each port, which beats one outing imposed on a hundred and sixty people. Enrich events open places closed to the public, and the Sundowners set up a reception at dusk somewhere along the way.

Air travel depends on the package. Depending on the market and the season, the line sells the same itinerary with or without the flight. Ask your advisor to confirm which of the two carries the date you are considering.

What life aboard assumes

An adult clientele, a day shaped by the port calls, and short evenings. There is no children's club and no childcare; the practical threshold is around twelve years. Saying otherwise would sell a voyage that disappoints the family before the first week is out.

The lift serves the main decks and stops short of the sun deck. Suites fitted for reduced mobility sit near reception on every ship. Their number varies from hull to hull and is worth checking on the deck plan.

What a Quebec agency protects

A licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur, a trust account for the sums received, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents. Three verifiable things, and the licence number appears on your contract. A booking made outside Quebec gives no right to them.

To that add something the law does not provide: someone who answers when a connection collapses in Frankfurt on a Sunday night and the ship leaves the next morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the Douro locks set a limit of about 83 metres. A longer ship cannot work up to the Spanish border. This one is 80 metres.
Ninety-six guests in 48 suites. It is the smallest complement among the line's European ships, imposed by the dimensions of the river rather than by a positioning choice.
Our inventory measured 365 departure dates on 26 August 2026, the second fullest calendar in the fleet. Most routes start from Lisbon or Porto.
The deepest in Europe. The ship drops some sixty metres in a single operation, between two concrete walls. It is worth watching from the deck rather than hearing about afterwards.
Spring for the green valley and long days, September for the harvest and the work under way in the quintas. In winter the programme thins out noticeably.
At the WestSEA yard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, in 2016. It is the line's only river ship built outside the Netherlands, and it was designed for this river alone.
Yes, from the quays. Several Upper Douro calls are a walk rather than a coach transfer, which is not the case on most other European rivers.
Some itineraries push to the border and toward Salamanca, as a land excursion. The navigable Spanish stretch is short, and the outing runs by road from the quay.
Yes, entirely. Gratuities for the crew, the guides and the drivers are all in the cruise fare. It is one of the clearest lines in this line's formula.
That depends on the arrangement you book. Some packages include the travel out, others leave it to you. Ask your advisor to confirm in writing what your file covers.
At least one per port, with several options to choose from. The exact number depends on the itinerary, and the day's programme is handed out aboard the evening before.
The practical threshold sits around twelve years, applied with some judgement by the line. Check the exact limit for the date and the ship you have in mind before booking.
No, and that is the point worth weighing. The sun deck is reached by stair, and it is the place the landscape is best seen from.
Yes, in every suite. High up the valley, among the schist terraces, land coverage becomes patchy and throughput suffers for it.
For the trust account and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents, neither of which follows a booking made outside Quebec. Add someone who answers when a connection collapses the day before embarkation.
