The Danube end to end

Most Danube cruises run between Passau and Budapest. Scenic Crystal does something else: its longest itineraries start at Bucharest and work up to Nuremberg, or the reverse. Our inventory on 26 August 2026 counted 185 departure dates, a notable share on that lower stretch few ships serve.

The lower Danube has nothing in common with the Austrian Danube. The Iron Gates, where the river drives between Serbia and Romania through a gorge tens of kilometres long, is the most spectacular passage on the whole European river network. Downstream, the Romanian and Bulgarian plain offers rural calls without tour coaches, which is becoming rare.

The first ship of the second generation

Delivered in 2012 by the Den Breejen yard, Crystal opens the generation carrying 169 guests in 85 suites across sixteen categories, against fourteen on the 2009 and 2011 hulls. It is 135 metres long.

That generation set the line's standard for the following decade. The six ships built after it repeat the same configuration, give or take a few details.

What the long route demands

An itinerary from Bucharest to Nuremberg runs over two weeks and crosses seven or eight countries. You have to like being under way: some days are spent entirely on the river without a call, and it is precisely on those days that the Iron Gates gorge is crossed.

The return flight does not leave from the city you started in, which complicates the air logistics and makes advice useful rather than decorative.

The other ships in the fleet

Scenic Jade, Scenic Jewel and Scenic Amber share its configuration. Scenic Opal shows the largest number of dates in 2026 among the Rhine and Danube ships.

The line's all-inclusive

It covers life aboard and the outings: gratuities, meals, standard wines and spirits at table, Wi-Fi, a butler in every suite, Freechoice excursions with a choice at each port, Enrich cultural events and Sundowner receptions. On the European ships, electric bicycles are available during port calls.

It does not cover fine vintages outside the standard selection, spa treatments, or gratuities left outside the organised route.

Air travel escapes that list because it varies with the package chosen. Some arrangements include it, others do not, and this changes with the market and the selling period. Have it confirmed in writing before booking rather than assuming it one way or the other.

The everyday aboard

Adult clientele, with no youth programme and no childcare, and a practical threshold around twelve years that the line applies with some judgement. This is not a cruise built to occupy children, and it is better known before booking than discovered aboard.

A lift links the main decks. The sun deck is reached by stair, which matters for a traveller with reduced mobility since that is where the landscape is best seen. Fitted suites sit near reception; their number is checked on the deck plan.

Booking here rather than elsewhere

Voyages AquaTerra is licensed by Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur. Money paid goes through a trust account and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents applies in the situations the law provides. That framework does not follow a booking made elsewhere.

Allow a connection, often two on distant itineraries, and a hotel night before embarkation. That night is not a luxury: it is the margin that absorbs a delayed flight.

In 2012, at the Den Breejen yard. It opens the sixteen-category generation, after the 2009 and 2011 hulls that had only fourteen.
Over two weeks, crossing seven or eight countries. Some days are spent entirely on the river without a call, and those are the days that cross the gorge.
Not at all. The Romanian and Bulgarian plain offers rural calls without tour coaches, where the Austrian Wachau receives thousands of visitors on every day of the season.
A hundred and thirty-five metres, the standard length of the line's European series. It passes everywhere on the Danube, from the Romanian delta to the Main-Danube canal.
No, on the long routes. The itinerary ends hundreds of kilometres from where it began, which complicates the air logistics and deserves early preparation.
None of that kind. The fare covers gratuities aboard and ashore. The line that really varies from one offer to another lies elsewhere: air travel, depending on the package.
It varies with the package. When air is not part of it, we book it for you separately, with a night on the ground before embarkation rather than a tight connection on the day.
A catalogue of outings included in the fare, with several choices at each port. You decide aboard, the evening before, by mood and by energy rather than months ahead.
Nothing is organised for one. A teenager curious about history and landscape may enjoy the trip; one looking for people their own age will be bored, and it is better said before departure.
Yes, near reception on every ship. Their exact number varies and is checked on the deck plan before booking, because they go early and they are not interchangeable.
It steps in where the Travel Agents Act provides, notably the failure of a supplier or an agency. The cover has defined limits and does not replace travel insurance. Have them explained before you pay a deposit.
