Twenty-five metres shorter, and the reason is in the bridges
Scenic Gem is 110 metres long. Its sisters in the European series are 135. The
gap is not an economy: the Seine imposes it. Between Paris and Honfleur the river
passes under old bridges and through locks whose dimensions have not been revised
in a long time.
A 135-metre ship does not make that run. A 110-metre ship does, at the cost of
126 berths instead of 169 and 63 suites instead of 85. The line therefore built a
specific hull rather than fitting an itinerary to an existing ship, which is the
reverse of what most of the sector does.
What the Seine gives and what it refuses
It gives Paris at the start or the finish, Rouen, the chalk cliffs of the lower
Seine, Honfleur, and the landing beaches within coach distance. It gives Giverny
too, where the garden is visited early before the day's coaches arrive.
It refuses speed. The meanders between Paris and Rouen stretch the run far
beyond the distance as the crow flies, so the ship spends more time under way
than a map suggests. For a traveller who likes watching the bank go by, that is
an advantage. For one who counts port calls, it is a disappointment announced in
advance.
A hull refitted in 2024
The ship entered service in 2014 and was refitted in 2024. The detail of that
work has not been published in a source we can cite, and we prefer to say so
rather than describe fittings we have not verified. Our inventory counted 181
departure dates on 26 August 2026.
The other ships in the fleet
Scenic Diamond holds the Bordeaux region, Scenic Sapphire the Rhône and the Saône. Scenic Azure serves the Douro
with an even shorter hull, and Scenic Pearl sails the Rhine and the Moselle.
The fare, line by line
Gratuities are included. That is the first difference noticed by travellers
used to lines where the end-of-cruise envelope is part of the ritual. Here
nothing is added to your bill on that account, not for the crew, not for the
guides, not for the drivers.
Meals are included, with the wines and standard spirits served at table.
Wi-Fi is included. Every suite has a butler. Freechoice excursions give you a
choice at each port, which beats one outing imposed on a hundred and sixty
people. Enrich events open places closed to the public, and the Sundowners set
up a reception at dusk somewhere along the way.
Air travel depends on the package. Depending on the market and the season,
the line sells the same itinerary with or without the flight. Ask your advisor
to confirm which of the two carries the date you are considering.
What life aboard assumes
An adult clientele, a day shaped by the port calls, and short evenings. There
is no children's club and no childcare; the practical threshold is around twelve
years. Saying otherwise would sell a voyage that disappoints the family before
the first week is out.
The lift serves the main decks and stops short of the sun deck. Suites fitted
for reduced mobility sit near reception on every ship. Their number varies from
hull to hull and is worth checking on the deck plan.
What a Quebec agency protects
A licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur, a trust
account for the sums received, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel
Agents. Three verifiable things, and the licence number appears on your contract.
A booking made outside Quebec gives no right to them.
To that add something the law does not provide: someone who answers when a
connection collapses in Frankfurt on a Sunday night and the ship leaves the next
morning.
