What travellers see of the locks, and what they do not

A cruise between Amsterdam and Budapest passes some sixty locks. Travellers notice five or six: the deepest ones, where the wall rises above the windows and the light goes for a few minutes. They sleep through the rest.

That is deliberate. Lines schedule the longest passages for the night, because a lock takes between twenty minutes and an hour and it is better crossed asleep than waiting. It explains why two itineraries identical on paper do not give the same experience depending on the direction of travel: the night programme changes with the heading.

Our inventory on 26 August 2026 counted 159 departure dates for this ship.

Rhine and Danube

Scenic Jasper works the two basins joined by the Main-Danube canal. The summit of the canal is more than four hundred metres above sea level: the ship sails along a watershed there, with the North Sea on one side and the Black Sea on the other.

That stretch is nothing to look at. It is worth what it makes possible, and the sun deck empties in favour of the lounge.

The hull

Delivered in 2015 by the Den Breejen yard, it is 135 metres long and carries 169 guests in 85 suites across sixteen categories. It was named by the writer Kathy Lette.

The other ships in the fleet

Scenic Opal and Scenic Amber are its direct contemporaries. Scenic Jade covers four rivers, and Scenic Ruby belongs to the first generation of the series.

What the cruise fare covers

The line's formula covers life aboard and the outings. Gratuities for crew, guides and drivers are included. So are meals, along with the wines, beers and standard spirits served at lunch and dinner. Every suite has butler service, with no distinction by category. Wi-Fi is included, with the usual caveat about throughput while under way.

Excursions belong to the fare through the Freechoice programme, which offers several outings per port rather than a single one. Added to these are the Enrich events, which open places the public cannot visit freely, and the Sundowners, receptions held at dusk somewhere along the route. A handheld guide lent aboard, called Tailormade, lets you walk a town alone with commentary in your ear.

Air travel depends on the package. The line sells arrangements with and without flights depending on the market and the season, and the same itinerary can appear in both forms. Have this confirmed before you pay a deposit: it is the line that varies most from one offer to the next.

Who this ship suits

The clientele is adult. There is no children's club, no childcare and no youth programme, and the line applies a practical threshold around twelve years, with a margin of judgement that belongs to it. A family with young children will be better served elsewhere, and it is better to hear that now than on the third day.

A lift serves the main decks. It does not reach the sun deck, which is accessible by stair. Every ship has suites fitted for reduced mobility, near reception; the exact number varies and should be checked on the deck plan before booking.

Booking from Quebec

Voyages AquaTerra operates under a licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur. The sums you pay move through a trust account kept separate from the agency's own funds, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents steps in where the law provides. That protection does not follow a booking made outside Quebec.

A cruise like this is built on logistics as much as on the choice of ship: flight, connection, a night on the ground before embarkation, transfer to the pier. That is the part where a file comes apart when nobody is watching it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some sixty between Amsterdam and Budapest. Travellers notice only five or six, the deepest ones; the rest are passed during the night, and that is deliberate.
Because a lock takes between twenty minutes and an hour. Lines schedule the longest passages for sleeping hours rather than have guests waiting on deck.
Not exactly. The direction of travel changes the night programme, so which locks you see and which you sleep through. It is a detail rarely explained in brochures.
The Rhine and the Danube, joined by the Main-Danube canal. The summit of the canal is more than four hundred metres above sea level, along a watershed.
A hundred and sixty-nine guests in 85 suites across sixteen categories, the standard configuration of the series since 2012.
Our inventory measured 159 departure dates on 26 August 2026, across 2026 and 2027, on the axis between Amsterdam, Prague and Budapest.
In 2015, at the Den Breejen yard in the Netherlands. It was named by the writer Kathy Lette, according to the technical sheets published at entry into service.
Not for the landscape, which is ordinary. It is worth what it makes possible: linking the North Sea to the Black Sea by river, which no other passage allows.
On the European river ships, no: it opens onto a high fixed window on the lower deck. The retractable glass balcony, the line's signature, starts on the decks above.
A hundred and thirty-five metres, the maximum the Main-Danube canal locks accept for this type of ship. It is the standard of the European series.
Yes, entirely. Gratuities for the crew, the guides and the drivers are all in the cruise fare. It is one of the clearest lines in this line's formula.
That depends on the arrangement you book. Some packages include the travel out, others leave it to you. Ask your advisor to confirm in writing what your file covers.
At least one per port, with several options to choose from. The exact number depends on the itinerary, and the day's programme is handed out aboard the evening before.
The practical threshold sits around twelve years, applied with some judgement by the line. Check the exact limit for the date and the ship you have in mind before booking.
For the trust account and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents, neither of which follows a booking made outside Quebec. Add someone who answers when a connection collapses the day before embarkation.
