Description
You click into your skis at the hotel door. No shuttle, no parking, no cars anywhere in the village: Aletsch Arena is entirely pedestrian and the hotels sit on the slopes. In the evening you come back the same way, on skis.
The area takes its name from the Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps, and from an arena, because more than forty summits above 4,000 metres stand in a ring around it. The whole site is a UNESCO World Heritage property under the name Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. Three resorts share the area, Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp, and the six-day pass opens all three, more than 100 kilometres of runs.
The January 29 departure gives nine days and seven nights. The flight leaves Montreal for Geneva with Air Canada, then the group goes up by coach or by train. David Lemieux travels with the group in French from departure to return. Valais sees roughly 300 days of sunshine a year, which explains the photographs.
The Hotel Alpfrieden houses the group on half board, with seven breakfasts and seven three-course dinners, so every evening is at the table. These are family hotels in the heart of the village, in what the tour operator calls a typically Swiss atmosphere.
