In January, when the Niagara vines sleep under the snow, the grapes left on the vine freeze overnight. Icewine is born of that cold, and every winter Niagara-on-the-Lake holds a festival in its honour. Queen Street then becomes a winter village, with ice sculptures, wood fires, chalets and glasses held with both hands.
The trip begins with a free dinner in Toronto's Distillery District, among 19th-century red brick. The next morning belongs to the festival and the old village, then the afternoon leads to three award-winning wineries, each with a tasting paired with small bites. On the last morning, the tunnels of Journey Behind the Falls lead behind the curtain of water of Niagara Falls, fringed with ice at this time of year.
