    Four possible fates, and why we do not pick one

    A river ship that leaves a fleet does not necessarily disappear. Four outcomes are common in the industry.

    She may be sold to another operator and renamed, which happens often: a well-maintained river hull lasts decades and finds a buyer. She may be chartered, that is, leased to a third party for a season or more while remaining the owner's property. She may be laid up and moored in waiting, for want of profitable employment. Or she may be scrapped, which remains rare for a recent river unit.

    Viking's European river fleet rests on some fifty Longships, identical to one another: 135 metres, 190 guests, 53 crew, 95 staterooms. What distinguishes one cruise from another is the river and the date.

    On the Rhine, look at Viking Rolf and her 86 departures; on the Danube, Viking Egil and her 149. Elsewhere, Viking Heimdal reaches 206 on the Rhône.
