Viking Fontane: replaced on the Elbe by a new generation

This ship no longer appears in the Viking fleet. Three concordant checks confirm it as at 25 August 2026: no departures in our catalogue, absence from the roster the line publishes, absence from the master list verified against the company's own pages.

    What replaced her

This is one of the few cases in our inventory where the succession is documented. The Neptun Werft yard, of the Meyer group, delivered two ships of a new generation for the Elbe: Viking Astrild and Viking Beyla. They are the ones now working the service between Děčín and Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

The two hulls measure about 110 metres and carry 98 guests to 33 crew. They are designed with a very shallow draught, because the Elbe is neither engineered nor regulated like the Rhine and its flow depends directly on rainfall in Bohemia.

    The route has not disappeared

That is the useful point for a client who was looking for this ship. The Elbe is still sold, with Dresden, Meissen and Wittenberg, and Prague as a land extension at the start or the end. Only the hull has changed.

Viking Astrild offers 152 departures and Viking Beyla 155, measured on 25 August 2026. Elsewhere in the fleet, Viking Heimdal reaches 206 departures on the Rhône.

Our Viking River Cruises advisors confirm in writing the exact fare, the inclusions and the applicable conditions before any booking, in line with Quebec consumer protection rules and participation in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.

    Frequently Asked Questions

No. Three concordant checks on 25 August 2026 show her absent: no departures with us, absence from the Viking roster, absence from the master list.
Viking Astrild and Viking Beyla, delivered by the Neptun Werft yard of the Meyer group. They now work the service between Děčín and Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
Yes, and that is rare in our inventory. The builder itself announces the two new Elbe ships as a pair.
98, with 33 crew, on about 110 metres. They are not Longships: the Elbe class has its own dimensions.
Because the Elbe is neither engineered nor regulated like the Rhine, and its flow depends directly on rainfall in Bohemia. It is the condition on which the service exists.
Yes. It is still sold, with Dresden, Meissen and Wittenberg, and Prague as a land extension at the start or the end. Only the hull has changed.
Viking Astrild offers 152 and Viking Beyla 155, measured on 25 August 2026 on the Děčín-Wittenberg route, in both directions.
No. We have no departures to sell on this ship and the line no longer lists her.
Because the name still circulates among former passengers. A clear answer beats an error page or an outdated brochure.
Because the Vltava is not navigable for a ship this size. Prague is a land extension of the route, not a river call.
Dresden and its Frauenkirche rebuilt between 1994 and 2005, Meissen and its porcelain manufactory founded in 1710, and Wittenberg where Luther drew up his 95 theses in 1517.
Through three independent instruments: departures in our own catalogue, the roster the line publishes, and a master list verified ship by ship.
Thirteen for Viking River, each with an explanatory text and a pointer to current ships in the same fleet.
Not from Quebec. The reservations site there redirects to a page stating it is unavailable and inviting travellers to contact an agent.
