Viking Legend: out of the fleet, and a name that gives away her generation

Three concordant checks as at 25 August 2026: no departures in our catalogue, absence from the roster Viking publishes, absence from the master list verified against the company's own pages.

    What the name tells you

Look at Viking's current river fleet: Heimdal, Skadi, Freya, Bragi, Kvasir, Gullveig. Some fifty hulls named from the Norse pantheon, without exception in the Longship series.

"Legend" does not belong to that convention. Neither does "Prestige", nor "Emerald". Those names come from an earlier nomenclature, in use before the line standardised with the arrival of the Longships in the early 2010s. The name alone therefore dates a ship in this fleet to within a generation — not proof, but a reliable indication.

We go no further. What became of the hull — sale, renaming, charter, lay-up — is established by none of our sources, and we would rather write that than offer a plausible explanation that turns out to be wrong.

    What to turn to

What sells today are the Longships, identical to one another: 135 metres, 190 guests, 53 crew. The choice is made on the river and the date.

On the Danube, Viking Vilhjalm offers 189 departures. On the Rhône, Viking Heimdal reaches 206, the fullest calendar in our Viking catalogue. On the Seine, Viking Kari has 193.

Our Viking River Cruises advisors confirm in writing the exact fare, the inclusions and the applicable conditions before any booking, in line with Quebec consumer protection rules and participation in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.

    Frequently Asked Questions

No. Three concordant checks on 25 August 2026 show her absent: no departures with us, absence from the Viking roster, absence from the master list.
The current river fleet carries names from the Norse pantheon — Heimdal, Skadi, Freya, Bragi — without exception in the Longship series.
Because she belongs to an earlier nomenclature, in use before the line standardised with the arrival of the Longships in the early 2010s.
To within a generation, yes. It is not proof, but it is a reliable indication in this fleet.
Our sources do not establish it. Sale, renaming, charter or lay-up are all possible, and we would rather write that than advance an unverified explanation.
Because a published hypothesis becomes information in the reader's eyes, and an error then spreads from site to site. We prefer documented silence.
No. We have no departures to sell on her and the line no longer lists her in its fleet.
The Longships, identical to one another: 135 metres, 190 guests, 53 crew. The choice is made on the river and the date, not on the ship.
Viking Heimdal, on the Rhône, with 206 departures measured on 25 August 2026. It is the fullest calendar of the 70 Viking ships in our catalogue.
Viking Vilhjalm, with 189 departures split almost evenly between Passau and Budapest in both directions.
Viking Kari, with 193 departures. The Seine ships are not Longships: they measure 125 metres and carry 168 guests.
Because the name still circulates among former passengers and in old links. A clear answer beats an error page.
Thirteen for Viking River, each with an explanatory text and a pointer to current ships in the same fleet.
Through three independent instruments: departures in our own catalogue, the roster the line publishes, and a master list verified ship by ship.
In writing, before booking. AquaTerra Travels follows Quebec consumer protection rules and participates in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.
