Travelling south to actually rest

A restful stay does not depend on the spa. It depends on three things: the size of the property, the noise level around the pool, and the length of the transfer from the airport. A small adults-only hotel twenty minutes from the airport rests you more than a thousand-room resort with the finest spa in the Caribbean.

Plenty of people leave for the sun exhausted and come home almost as tired. That is not a question of destination. It is a question of choices made without thinking at the moment of booking.

Why some weeks rest you and others do not

The difference rarely comes down to the quality of the hotel. It comes down to pace.

A large resort is designed to occupy you: activities in the morning, more in the afternoon, a show at night, music around the pool all day. That is excellent for a family with ten-year-olds, and exhausting for someone who arrives empty.

A small quiet property does the opposite. It offers almost nothing, which is precisely what you want when you no longer feel like deciding anything.

The first question to ask is therefore not "which hotel has the best spa" but "do I want to be occupied or left alone".

The five criteria of a genuinely restful stay

  1. Size. Under three hundred rooms, a hotel keeps a human rhythm. Past seven hundred it runs like a small town, with the noise, queues and logistics that implies.
  2. Adults-only, or not. This is not a judgement about children, it is a different product. The noise level, the dinner hour and the tone of the service are not the same. For a couple who came to sleep and read, the difference is immediate.
  3. The length of the transfer. An hour and a half of road after a five-hour flight eats into the first day and the last. Twenty minutes does not.
  4. The orientation and calm of the beach. A sheltered bay with still water rests differently from a windy coast with waves. And a leeward beach largely escapes the sargassum, which spares you the daily irritation of waking up to seaweed.
  5. The distance between your room and the stage. The most mundane and most decisive detail. Ask for a high floor, away from the main pool and the theatre.

The spa, the yoga, and what they actually give you

Wellness facilities have multiplied across Caribbean resorts, and they are often very good. Two honest clarifications, though.

Access to the facilities and the treatments are two different things. Many packages include the water circuit, the hammam and the sauna, and charge for each massage separately. Have it spelled out which of the two is included, because the budget gap over a week is considerable.

A yoga class on the beach is not a practice. It is pleasant, it replaces nothing, and it is not a reason to choose a hotel. If yoga genuinely matters to you, look instead for a property with a resident teacher and a fixed schedule, which is far rarer than the photographs suggest.

The destinations that rest you most

  1. Aruba. The most predictable weather of any destination served from here: about four hundred and fifty millimetres of rain a year and three degrees between the coolest and warmest month. The resort beaches are leeward, so largely spared by the sargassum. For anyone who wants no unpleasant surprises, it is the safest choice.
  2. The Dominican Republic, Cap Cana or Uvero Alto. Quieter than Bávaro, with the same remarkable beach. Uvero Alto asks for about forty minutes of transfer rather than twenty.
  3. Jamaica, around Negril. The hotel stock there leans heavily toward couples and adults-only, with attentive service. Do check the state of the property, though: rebuilding after the October 2025 hurricane is continuing.
  4. Barbados, west coast. Sheltered, calm, little sargassum, an island that does not live off mass tourism. The stay is built rather than bought in one block, which suits anyone wanting a slow rhythm.

Costa Rica appears often on wellness destination lists. It is an excellent trip, and it is not a restful one: you move around a great deal and the days are full. Book it when you want to come home with memories, not when you want to come home rested.

What a week in the sun does not fix

Worth saying plainly, because a great deal of writing on this subject promises the opposite.

A week of holiday rests a tired body and clears the head. It does not resolve an exhaustion that has been building for months, an untenable work situation, or real distress. People who leave hoping to come back transformed usually come back disappointed, and sometimes more discouraged than before, because they placed on one week an expectation no week can carry.

If that is the situation, a trip is still a good thing, but it comes in addition to the rest rather than instead of it. And it is better chosen simple: few transfers, few decisions to make, somewhere quiet.

Three things that genuinely change a stay

  1. Arrive a day earlier than you need to. The first day of a trip is rarely restful. Adding a night means it stops counting against you.
  2. Book nothing for the first two days. Excursions planned in advance turn a holiday into a schedule.
  3. Decide in advance what you will do about your phone. Not a vague resolution, a concrete rule: one window for messages, the rest outside the room. People who decide nothing check their email the first morning and never stop.

Telling your adviser

"I want quiet" is one of the most useful things an adviser can be told, because it eliminates three quarters of the catalogue immediately. Say whether you want adults-only, a small property, a short transfer, and the trip gets built around that rather than around a price.
