History

Sixty-five crew for eighty-two guests

The figure is worth setting down as it stands. AmaLilia carries 82 guests in 41 cabins, with a crew of around sixty-five. That is almost one crew member per guest.

On the line's European hulls the ratio runs closer to one in three. The difference is not a matter of higher luxury but of local practice: Egyptian service employs more people, and part of the crew covers functions that do not exist elsewhere, notably around the site visits.

What that changes for you: you are recognised by the second day, your table is known, and a request made in the morning is settled before evening. What it does not change: the July heat and the length of the walks at Karnak.

A 2024 hull

The ship came out of a Cairo yard in 2024 and is among the most recent in the fleet. Seventy-two metres long, thirteen wide, on a river where navigation is simpler than in Europe: no deep locks, no low bridges, a steady current.

Our count on 26 August 2026 found 102 departure dates, on the route between Luxor and Aswan.

The other ships in the fleet

AmaDahlia is its sister ship. AmaDara serves the Mekong, AmaMelodia and AmaMagdalena the Colombian Magdalena.

The fare, line by line

It covers life aboard: the cabin, all meals, wine and beer at lunch and dinner, soft drinks at any hour, a daily cocktail, and a guided excursion at every port. Wi-Fi is included. The European ships carry bicycles, available during port calls.

Excursions are chosen by effort level: gentle, regular or active. The active level means walking a long way, often uphill and on cobbles. The gentle level exists for a reason, and nobody will judge you for taking it.

Two items stay on your account: gratuities, included on no destination, and air travel, unless bought through the line's air programme. Putting both in the budget at the outset avoids the unpleasant surprise of the last day.

What life aboard assumes

An adult clientele, days shaped by the port calls, short evenings. No children's club, no childcare, no youth activities. Minors share a cabin with a responsible adult, and the minimum age depends on the destination.

The lift links the main decks without reaching the sun deck. Boarding is by a gangway whose slope changes from quay to quay, and sometimes by crossing another ship. These are details as long as you walk well, and real obstacles otherwise.

What a Quebec agency protects

A licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur, a trust account for the sums received, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents. Three verifiable things, and the licence number appears on your contract. A booking made outside Quebec gives no right to them.

To that add what the law does not provide: someone who answers when a connection collapses on a Sunday night and the ship leaves the next morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eighty-two guests in 41 cabins, with a crew of around sixty-five. That is almost one crew member per guest, against roughly one in three on the European hulls.
Local practice explains it: Egyptian service employs more people, and part of the crew covers functions tied to the site visits that do not exist elsewhere.
You are recognised by the second day, your table is known, and a request made in the morning is settled before evening. It changes nothing about the July heat.
The Nile, between Luxor and Aswan. Navigation there is simpler than in Europe: no deep locks, no low bridges, a steady current.
Our inventory measured 102 departure dates on 26 August 2026, on the route between Luxor and Aswan, spread over several years.
In 2024, at a Cairo yard. It is among the most recent hulls in the line's fleet, across all destinations, and the sister of an earlier ship on the same river.
Winter. From May to September Upper Egypt regularly passes forty degrees in the shade, and visits are made early in the morning for that reason.
Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae. These are hours of walking on sand and stone, often without shade.
The cabins carry the line's twin balcony: a sliding glass wall and a real outdoor balcony. In this climate the shade of the balcony counts as much as the view.
Ordinary service is; gratuities are not. That is a real difference from several river lines in the same category, and it is sometimes discovered too late.
Yes, unless you go through the line's air programme. Either way, plan a night on the ground before embarkation rather than a tight connection.
Gentle for a slow pace and little walking, regular for moderate activity, active for sustained walking with stairs and slopes. The gentle level exists for a reason, and nobody will judge you for taking it.
It depends on the destination, and published sources do not agree on a single figure. Have the minimum age confirmed for the date and ship you have in mind before booking.
Yes, for Canadian travellers, with arrangements that change. Your advisor will check the conditions in force for your nationality before departure.
For the trust account and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents, neither of which follows a booking made elsewhere. Add someone who answers when a connection collapses the day before departure.
