Northern Europe and Baltic Cruise

A Baltic cruise visits capitals rather than beaches. In seven to fourteen nights the ship strings together Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn and often Riga, Gdynia or Berlin through its port at Warnemünde. The season runs from May to September, and the region's itinerary was redrawn in 2022 when St Petersburg was dropped.

What the loss of St Petersburg changed

Until 2022 Russia held the leading role. Two full days in St Petersburg, the Hermitage, Peterhof, and a visa avoided thanks to the ship's excursion ticket. That call has gone from the programmes.

Lines redistributed those days to Tallinn, Helsinki, Stockholm and Riga, with longer calls and sometimes an overnight alongside. The result often surprises people for the better: the trip gained balance, and the Baltic capitals that used to serve as filler became destinations in their own right. A client who sailed the Baltic before 2022 is therefore taking a different trip.

When to go

The season runs from May to September. June and July bring Scandinavia's white nights, with light that lasts past midnight and terraces full at hours that startle a Canadian. May and September give quieter cities, cooler temperatures and gentler fares outside the peak weeks.

One seasonal note: the Baltic closes quickly. Departures stop by mid-September, and the ships leave for the Mediterranean or the autumn transatlantic.

The capitals and what sets them apart

Copenhagen is the embarkation port for a good share of itineraries, with the Nyhavn waterfront and a cycling culture you understand within an hour on foot. Stockholm is earned through a channel of several hours among the archipelago islands, and the approach alone justifies the early alarm.

Tallinn holds the best-preserved medieval old town in the region, entirely walkable from the pier. Helsinki plays architecture and sauna rather than the picturesque. Riga owns Europe's largest Art Nouveau quarter, and many passengers walk through it without knowing. Gdynia gives access to Gdańsk, rebuilt after 1945 and the birthplace of a movement that changed Europe.

Berlin appears in several brochures, but the ship docks at Warnemünde, roughly two hundred and thirty kilometres from the capital. The day is then spent largely on a train or a coach, and the arithmetic deserves doing before you book the excursion.

Big ship or small ship

The large ships of MSC, Princess, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean bring comfort, restaurants and a more accessible entry fare. They sometimes dock well outside the centre, which adds a shuttle or a taxi at each call.

The smaller ships of Viking, Ponant and Holland America berth in the heart of the cities and land fewer people at once. The difference shows most in Tallinn and Visby, where two thousand passengers change the atmosphere of an old town of a few streets.

What you are not always told

The days are full. A Baltic cruise strings calls together with few sea days, and the pace surprises travellers who came for rest. Anyone with reduced mobility should check each call: the old towns of Tallinn, Riga and Visby are cobbled and steep.

Currencies change from one country to the next. Danish krone, Swedish krona, the euro in Finland, Estonia and Latvia, the zloty in Poland. Cards work almost everywhere in Scandinavia, where cash has all but disappeared.

The weather stays cool even in July. Count on a windbreaker and a waterproof layer, and know that fifteen degrees on an exposed deck feels like ten.

How long to allow

Seven nights cover the main capitals from Copenhagen or Stockholm. Eleven to fourteen nights add southern Norway, Oslo and Kristiansand, or let you sail from Southampton across the North Sea.

The formula our clients like best adds two or three nights in Copenhagen or Stockholm before embarkation. Both cities walk beautifully, and a six-hour time difference settles better ashore than in port.

Getting there from Canada

Copenhagen is reachable on a direct summer flight from Montreal, which makes it the simplest embarkation port for a Canadian. Stockholm, Helsinki and Oslo usually require a European connection. The time difference is six hours.

The usual rule applies with extra force here: arrive at least the day before, and two nights ahead if your flight involves a connection. Delayed luggage catches up with you in Copenhagen; it catches up far less well in Tallinn.
