Long before docking, you can make out the silhouette: a tall stone column standing on the hill, topped with a bronze figure, wings spread wide. The Batina monument watches over a bend in the Danube where three countries face one another — Croatia on this bank, Serbia across the water, Hungary a few kilometres upstream. Below, a village of about a thousand people, quiet streets lined with orchards, and one of the smallest cruise landing points on the river.

A Hill Steeped in Memory

In November 1944, one of the most significant battles of the Danube front played out here, when Soviet forces and Yugoslav partisans crossed the river against the German army. The memorial raised after the war honours the thousands of soldiers who fell during that crossing. It's a fifteen-minute walk up from the village. At the top, the silence commands respect, and the view stretches out over the Pannonian Plain: the Danube unrolls its sandbars, floodplain forests ripple out to the horizon, and on a clear day, your eye can travel freely from one country to the next.

Baranja, a Preserved Corner of the Countryside

Batina serves as the gateway to Baranja, a triangle of farmland tucked between the Drava and Danube rivers. Excursions offered during port calls often lead to the museum village of Karanac, about twenty kilometres away, where old farmhouses with steep roofs house workshops, horse-drawn carriages and everyday objects from the past. Locals here keep alive a generous cuisine shaped by Hungarian influences: paprika-spiced kulen sausage, slow-simmered stews, and white wines drawn from cellars dug straight into the loess hills. In the nearby villages of Zmajevac and Suza, these underground cellars line entire streets; winemakers welcome groups here with a chilled graševina and a plate of cured meats, offering the same straightforward hospitality found throughout the Danube countryside. Kopački Rit Nature Park

A half-hour drive away opens onto one of the largest inland wetlands in Europe. Kopački Rit, often nicknamed Europe's Amazon, sits at the confluence of the Drava and the great river itself: a maze of ponds, reed beds and flooded forests home to nearly 300 bird species. From wooden boardwalks or during a boat outing, you can spot herons, cormorants, and, with a bit of luck, the heavy flight of a white-tailed eagle. Deer and wild boar roam the undergrowth. For nature lovers, this excursion alone justifies the stop in Batina.

The Village Itself

Those who prefer to stay near the ship won't be wasting their time. A stroll leads from the dock to the parish church, then along the low houses where residents grow peppers and tomatoes. Fishermen mend their nets near the bridge crossing the water toward Serbia. You move at an unhurried pace, exchange a nod here and there, and sometimes sit in the shade of a walnut tree while swallows stitch the sky above the rooftops. Baranja isn't a place to rush through; it's one you get to know slowly, like a country house you'd come back to every summer.

As the ship casts off, the winged statue on the hill catches the light one last time. Batina offers what the big cities can't: an open-air history lesson, wetlands teeming with life, and the quiet stubbornness of a border village that has weathered the century's storms without losing its calm.
