In the heart of Chora, the island capital. From the gangway you can already see the red carpet running up the avenue towards the basilica of Panagia Evangelistria, the most venerated sanctuary in Greece.
Because in 1823 a nun named Pelagia revealed the location of a buried icon of the Virgin. The church raised on the spot has drawn crowds from across the Orthodox world ever since, and some pilgrims climb the avenue on their knees.
About fifteen minutes' walk from the landing, at the end of a gently sloping avenue. The galleries of the complex hold museums, chapels and fountains, and model ships left in thanks hang above the pillars.
