Serenade of the Seas: San Diego, Vancouver, Tampa — three coasts, three seasons

Our 126 departures on Serenade of the Seas split between San Diego (48), Vancouver (26) and Tampa (26). Three distinct coasts: south Pacific, north Pacific, Gulf of Mexico.

That split follows the seasons. Vancouver opens Alaska between May and September, San Diego covers Baja California and the Mexican coast the rest of the year, Tampa gives the western Caribbean. One ship, three programmes.

Twenty-three years, no documented refit

Delivered in 2003, Serenade has no documented refurbishment to our knowledge. Radiance of the Seas (25 years) and Brilliance of the Seas (24 years) are in the same position. Jewel of the Seas, delivered a year after Serenade at the same yard, went into dry dock at Brest in May 2024.

Four sister ships, one refitted. That is not an opinion, it is an observation, and it should enter the comparison of a client hesitating between the four.

The measurements, and what we refuse to publish

Delivered in 2003 by the Meyer Werft yard at Papenburg, Germany, Serenade is rated at 90,090 gross tons and has 12 decks, with 891 crew — the largest complement of the four ships in her class.

Her length and her beam are contradicted within our own source: two values for each. We publish neither. Our source also gives 2,490 guests without specifying whether that is double occupancy or maximum capacity, and we carry the figure unqualified.

Gas turbines, upside and downside

The Radiance class is powered by gas turbines. Cleaner emissions, higher consumption. Documented propulsion trouble affected several departures in the class in 2023 and 2024.

On an Alaska itinerary, where distances between ports are long and weather windows short, that warrants suitable travel insurance. We say so before booking rather than after.

What the class offers of its own

More than 12,000 square metres of glass, glazed exterior panoramic lifts, over 700 staterooms with a balcony and a retractable roof above one pool. On an Alaska itinerary, that amount of glazing becomes a concrete argument: you watch the landscape from indoors when it is 8 degrees outside.

At 90,090 tons, Serenade moves more than a 236,857-ton unit such as Wonder of the Seas. Worth knowing if you are prone to seasickness.

What 90,090 tons mean underfoot

Across 12 decks, the stateroom's position relative to the lifts still weighs more than the deck number, but the ship forgives far more than a 362-metre hull. Over seven days that difference is measured in tens of minutes of walking per person.

Who she suits

Alaska travellers who want glazing rather than volume, those sailing from San Diego, and couples who prefer 2,490 berths to 5,610. A client who insists on recent spaces should look at Jewel of the Seas.

Our Royal Caribbean advisors confirm the exact fare, inclusions and applicable conditions before any booking, in line with Quebec consumer protection rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

From San Diego (48 departures), Vancouver (26) and Tampa (26), out of 126 in total. Three distinct coasts and three complementary seasons.
The 26 Vancouver departures cover the May to September season. Outside that window the ship is deployed at San Diego or Tampa.
We have found no documented refurbishment since her delivery in 2003, so 23 years. Of the four Radiance-class ships, only Jewel of the Seas has been refitted, at Brest in May 2024.
Our source gives 2,490 guests without specifying whether that is double occupancy or maximum capacity. We carry the figure unqualified, because qualifying it would be inventing.
Because our source gives two different values, as it does for her beam. A figure contradicted within its own source is never published.
She is rated at 90,090 gross tons and has 12 decks, with 891 crew. That is the largest complement of the four ships in her class.
In 2003, at the Meyer Werft yard in Papenburg, Germany. She is the third ship of the Radiance class.
Yes, concretely. More than 12,000 square metres of glass and glazed exterior panoramic lifts let you watch the landscape from indoors when it is 8 degrees outside.
By gas turbines, like the whole Radiance class. Cleaner emissions, higher consumption, and documented propulsion trouble on several departures in the class in 2023 and 2024.
It is strongly recommended. Distances between ports are long, weather windows short, and the Radiance class had documented propulsion trouble in 2023 and 2024.
In about five and a half hours on a direct flight, followed by a transfer to the pier. The transfer is never included by default and is arranged separately.
By a flight with at least one connection, usually through an American hub. Allow a full day of travel.
Twelve decks, against 20 for an Icon-class ship. It is a human-scale format, designed around natural light rather than around volume.
Less than a large ship. At 90,090 tons she moves more than a 236,857-ton unit such as Wonder of the Seas. That is worth knowing before booking.
