A calendar that is closing

Our inventory shows fifteen departure dates for River Duchess. In a fleet where European ships routinely carry well over a hundred, that number says something. Trade press reported in 2025 that the ship moves to Trafalgar River Cruises in April 2027, a brand within the same group, under the name Harmonie, and changes rivers for the Seine. Uniworld has published no statement of its own, so treat the report as what it is: consistent, credible trade reporting rather than a confirmation from the line.

What that means for you in practice: if you wanted this particular ship, the window is short. If you simply wanted the Danube or the Rhine, it is not short at all, and S.S. Beatrice or S.S. Maria Theresa sail far wider calendars.

The hull

One hundred and ten metres, 130 guests, 41 crew. The ship left the yard in 2003 and was refurbished in 2012. It works the Danube, the Rhine and the Main, which makes it a cross-Europe ship rather than a regional one.

One detail is better said before departure than after: cabin windows do not open, suites included. Travellers who like sleeping with river air in the room should know that. The ship has a lift, which is not true of every hull of this generation.

One hundred and ten metres, and why it matters

A 110-metre hull berths where a 135-metre hull waits its turn. On the Danube in high season the quays at Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest fill up, and ships raft together side by side. You then walk through a neighbour's lounge to go ashore, and your window looks onto their hull. A shorter ship more often slips into the inside berth. Nobody promises this. You simply observe it.

For comparison, S.S. Antoinette measures 135 metres and S.S. La Venezia is 110 like this one.

What the package contains

Shipboard gratuities included. Meals included. A selection of wines, beers and spirits served through the day. Scheduled excursions and the transfers in your file included. Bicycles, walking poles and onboard fitness sessions included as well.

Wi-Fi comes as a courtesy and without guarantee. It weakens in locks and vanishes on some stretches. If you need to stay reachable for work, arrange something that does not depend on the ship.

Not included: airfare, visas, travel insurance, laundry, spa treatments, communication charges and optional excursions.

Accessibility: what the contract actually says

Reasonable efforts, with no guarantee of full accessibility. No mobility equipment supplied. A companion able to assist is required for any traveller who needs help. Add a gangway whose slope varies with the water level and excursions that often run over cobblestones. The question of a lift belongs to each ship individually and deserves a written answer before you pay a deposit.

From Montreal

Allow a full day in transit outbound. Evening flights to Europe arrive the following morning, and the body takes two or three days to settle into the new time zone. A hotel night before embarkation turns a ragged arrival into a clean start.

Voyages AquaTerra operates under a licence from Quebec's Office de la protection du consommateur. Funds are held in the trust account required by the Travel Agents Act, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents covers your booking. These protections are written down, not merely claimed.

Frequently Asked Questions

One hundred and thirty guests, looked after by 41 crew. It is one of the smaller capacities in Uniworld's European fleet, which shows most in the restaurant and on the gangway, where queues form.
Trade press reported in 2025 that the ship transfers to Trafalgar River Cruises in April 2027, as Harmonie, on the Seine. Uniworld has issued no statement confirming this. Our inventory shows fifteen departure dates, which points the same way. Have your date confirmed before paying a deposit.
Fifteen departures measured in our inventory on 26 August 2026, against more than a hundred for most European ships in the fleet. A calendar that short usually accompanies a final season under a given flag.
They do not. River Duchess has fixed windows, suites included. If sleeping with river air matters to you, choose another hull in the fleet and have your advisor verify the detail before booking.
Yes, River Duchess has a lift. It generally does not reach the sun deck, as on most river ships, because the upper structure has to fold down to pass under low bridges.
The Danube, the Rhine and the Main. That combination allows crossing itineraries between Amsterdam and Budapest, or further east, rather than a round trip within one region.
One hundred and ten metres. Shorter than the fleet's 135-metre hulls, which helps at berthing when the quays are saturated in high season.
Shipboard gratuities are included in the Uniworld package in Europe. You do not finish the cruise preparing envelopes. Anything you choose to give ashore, in a restaurant for instance, stays at your discretion.
Wi-Fi is offered as a courtesy, with no guarantee of availability or speed. It drops in locks and on remote stretches of the Danube. Arrange something else if you must stay reachable for work.
In 2003, refurbished in 2012. Uniworld publishes both dates. No later refurbishment is documented, which does not mean none happened, only that it is not established.
The minimum age is five on European itineraries. A traveller under eighteen shares a cabin with someone twenty-one or older. The ship has neither a children's programme nor facilities for them.
Uniworld promises reasonable efforts without guaranteeing accessibility, supplies no mobility equipment and requires a companion able to assist. River Duchess has a lift, which helps, but the gangway tilts with the water level and excursions run over cobblestones.
A full day in transit outbound. The evening flight from Montreal lands in Europe the next morning, six hours out of step. Most travellers sleep a night on the ground before boarding, and are glad they did.
The published itinerary is an intention rather than a guarantee. If the level runs too low or too high, the line may reroute, move guests by coach or swap two ships. The contract provides for this without refund, which is what makes travel insurance relevant.
For the trust account and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents, neither of which applies to a booking made outside Quebec. Add someone who answers the phone when an itinerary changes mid-trip.
