Viking Jarl: 92 departures, and the one question that really changes your week

46 departures from Budapest to Regensburg, 42 the reverse, measured on 25 August 2026, out of 92 in total. The ship is identical to the eleven other Longships we sell on the Danube. What is not identical is the stateroom you take on her.

The five categories, explained plainly

The 95 staterooms split into 25 Standard, 22 French Balcony, 39 Veranda, 7 Veranda Suites and 2 Explorer Suites.

Standard rooms sit on the lower deck. Their window is fixed and set high, half above the waterline: you see sky and the tops of quays, not the river at eye level. It is the most economical category and it suits anyone planning to spend their days ashore and on the sun deck perfectly well. It suits poorly anyone dreaming of watching the Wachau pass from bed.

French Balcony rooms have a full-height glass door opening onto a rail: air and the view, but no outdoor floor and no chair. Veranda rooms add a real balcony with two seats. Veranda Suites and the two Explorer Suites go up in floor area and fit-out.

The honest advice fits in one sentence: over seven days in central Europe a balcony earns its keep less than in the Caribbean, because it is often cool and you are ashore in the morning. The French Balcony is the best compromise for most travellers.

Two details the category descriptions leave out. First, on a 135-metre ship no stateroom is far from anything: the dining room, the lounge and the sun deck sit within 60 metres of any door, which makes location far less decisive than on a 300-metre ocean ship. Second, the 25 Standard staterooms are on the lower deck, which the lift does not serve: Viking Embla sets out that mobility point, and it holds for all 12 Danube ships.

Jarl, a rank rather than a god

Jarl is not a god but a title: the noble, the earl, the one who commands. The poem Rígsþula tells how the god Ríg fathered three human lines — Thrall the serf, Karl the free man, Jarl the noble. Hers is the only Longship named after a social class rather than a deity.

For a fuller calendar on the same route, Viking Tor offers 152 departures and Viking Gullveig 159.

Getting there from Montreal

One connection to Munich or Budapest, for 13 to 15 hours door to door, then an hour by road to Regensburg.

What happens when you book with us

First a fact you can verify in 30 seconds: from a Quebec address, Viking's reservations site does not answer and sends you to a page inviting you to contact an agent. The agency is not an added intermediary, it is the only route open.

Then a method. A Viking River Cruises advisor confirms in writing the exact fare, what the package covers and what it does not, before any deposit. That is what Quebec consumer protection rules require, and we participate in the compensation fund for travel agency customers.
