68 departures from Regensburg to Budapest, 67 from Budapest to Regensburg, measured on 25 August 2026. A single date between the two directions, out of 152. The remaining 17 cover other routings.

That symmetry has one simple practical consequence: direction becomes a real choice rather than an inventory constraint. On the Rhine the question does not even arise, since nearly every departure runs down from Basel to Amsterdam.

What direction actually changes

Downstream, you leave Germany and arrive in Budapest, and the trip ends on the most spectacular city of the route, at night, with the Parliament lit from the river. Upstream, you begin in Budapest and finish in Bavaria, more quietly, which suits anyone going back to work the next day.

Neither formula is better. But one or the other decides which city you spend your extra hotel night in, and that can be planned.

Hers is the only name in the series that fits in three letters. Thor, god of thunder, protector of men, whose hammer always returned to his hand. Every Longship carries a name from the Norse pantheon; this one is the most recognisable in the fleet.

Getting there from Montreal

One mandatory connection to Munich or Budapest — Frankfurt, Zurich, Paris or Amsterdam — then an hour by road to Regensburg. Plan on 13 to 15 hours door to door for the air portion. Viking Skadi starts instead from Passau, half an hour further out.
