Viking Spirit: a river ship now sailing as Seine Comtesse

Viking Spirit existed, and she still does. She was not an ocean ship, whatever the name suggests: she was a river ship, chartered by Viking until 2016. Today she is named MS Seine Comtesse and sails the Seine for nicko cruises.

The ship

Built in 2001 at the De Merwede yard in the Netherlands, one hundred and fourteen metres long by a little under twelve wide, drawing one metre fifty. Four decks with staterooms on three of them, seventy-five cabins, around forty crew.

With Viking she carried up to two hundred guests. After her 2016 refit she takes one hundred and fifty: the same ship, with larger and fewer cabins. That is the long trend in European river cruising over the past twenty years.

A charter, not a purchase

The ship belonged to Premicon AG and Viking operated her under contract. In 2016 the line ended a whole series of similar charters, among them Viking Sun which became Rhein Melodie, Viking Helvetia which became Rhein Symphonie, Viking Pride which became Bijou du Rhône and Viking Danube which became Filia Rheni 2.

That explains why so many Viking names vanish from catalogues at once without a single ship being scrapped. The name belonged to the contract, not to the hull.

Paris and Normandy today

Under her present name she runs seven-night round trips from Paris to Normandy and back. It is the same itinerary Viking sold aboard her, served now by another operator.
