Luxor, Aswan, and a capacity the sources do not settle
AmaDahlia sails the Nile, between Luxor and Aswan. The hull came out of a Cairo
yard and took its first guests in September 2021. It is 72 metres long and has 36
cabins.
On the number of guests, we run into a disagreement. One technical source gives
two different figures in two places on its own page. No other settles it. We
prefer to tell you the exact capacity is not established rather than pick
whichever of the two tells best. Your advisor can have it confirmed by the line
before you book.
What the Nile asks of you
A tolerance for heat, first. From May to September, Upper Egypt regularly
passes forty degrees in the shade, and the temples are visited early in the
morning for that reason. Winter is the comfortable season, and it is also the
most sought after.
Then, acceptance of the rhythm. Egyptian river cruising alternates slow sailing
days with dense site visits. Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo,
Philae: these are hours of walking on sand and stone, often without shade.
A large crew
This line's Nile ships carry a proportionally much larger crew than the
European hulls. That follows from local practice and from the service expected on
this destination. The ratio of staff to guests is closer to a resort hotel than
to a river ship.
The other ships in the fleet
AmaLilia is its sister on the same river. AmaDara serves the Mekong, AmaMagdalena and AmaMelodia the
Colombian Magdalena.
The line's formula
Meals included, wine and beer at meals included, soft drinks included, a
daily cocktail included, guided excursions included at every port, Wi-Fi
included, bicycles aboard the European ships.
Every outing carries an effort level announced in advance: gentle, regular or
active. It is one of the better things this line does, because it lets two
travellers in the same couple choose different paces on the same morning without
one imposing their stride on the other.
Two exclusions to know: gratuities, which stay on your account everywhere,
and air travel, unless it goes through the line's air programme. The line
suggests a gratuity amount per destination; it does not add it to your bill
automatically.
The everyday aboard
Adult clientele, with no youth programme and no childcare. Every traveller
under eighteen shares a cabin with a responsible adult. The minimum age varies
by destination and tightens on the African journeys.
A lift serves the main decks. The sun deck is reached by stair, which matters
since that is where the river is best seen from. Boarding gangways vary with the
quay, and some calls require crossing a neighbouring ship. Flag any mobility
constraint when you book.
Booking here rather than elsewhere
Voyages AquaTerra is licensed by Quebec's Office de la protection du
consommateur. Money paid goes through a trust account and the Compensation Fund
for Customers of Travel Agents applies in the situations the law provides. That
framework does not follow a booking made elsewhere.
A river cruise is built on logistics as much as on the choice of ship:
flight, connection, a night on the ground, transfer to the pier. That is the
part where a file comes apart when nobody is watching it.
