Yes, twice in under a year. In fall 2026 it crosses the Atlantic for a short Mediterranean season out of Barcelona, then returns to Port Canaveral on October 30, 2026. In May 2027 it leaves Florida for good: a 15-day Southern Caribbean voyage on May 8, 2027, brings it to Norfolk, Virginia, arriving May 23, 2027, where it will be based year-round.
Because it burned twice. In May 2022 at Grand Turk, the starboard wing of the whale-tail funnel was destroyed; the port wing was removed during emergency repairs. The full funnel was rebuilt in October 2023, then lightning set the new port wing on fire in March 2024. Since then Freedom sails with a straight funnel — functional, but without the Carnival silhouette.
Not confirmed. Carnival has explained that a replacement would mean cancelling two or three cruises, which the line has refused to do so far. The roughly five-week dry dock announced for fall 2026, during the European season, is the best opportunity since 2024, but Carnival has promised nothing publicly. Do not sell the whale tail to a client before confirmation.
At Fincantieri's Marghera yard near Venice, delivered in 2007. It is the only one of these four ships not built at Monfalcone. The yard describes it as the fifth unit identical to Carnival Conquest. At 289.8 m it is also slightly shorter than its sisters at 290.2 m — no practical difference on board, but a real one in the registers.
2,980 passengers at double occupancy, but up to 4,075 at absolute maximum — the highest of these four ships, roughly 270 more than Glory or Valor. In practice, Freedom is the one that gets densest during family peak periods. It also has 45 staterooms adapted for reduced mobility, against 26 or 27 on its sisters.
Yes. Starting September 2027, Freedom offers 8-night Atlantic Canada cruises from Norfolk, calling at Halifax, Sydney, Saint John and Charlottetown. Four departures are scheduled between September 4 and October 16, 2027. Alongside them are 6-night Bermuda cruises with two full days on the island, a product Carnival rarely offers.
Some are. Cabins on decks 2, 6 and 8 located directly below or above the dining rooms and show lounges take noticeable noise early in the morning and late at night. This is a known layout flaw on this ship. Another frequent irritant: the deck 3 layout forces you to go up and back down to cross from end to end.
No, but it is decent for the class. The WaterWorks park was installed in February-March 2019 and includes a main slide of roughly 62 m plus a second slide, with a splash zone for toddlers. Against Excel-class ships it is modest: no roller coaster, no multiple tube towers. Against Carnival Conquest, which has a single slide, it is clearly better.
Yes, before September 1, 2026. Carnival Rewards replaces the former program on that date and status does not carry over by itself: you must accept enrollment in your Carnival account. If you have booked Freedom's transatlantic crossing or a fall 2026 Mediterranean sailing, do it before you board. After the date, untransferred sailing days are lost.
It depends on the season. For Port Canaveral, through spring 2027: a nonstop Montréal-Orlando flight, then about an hour by road. For the fall 2026 Mediterranean season: a flight to Barcelona. For Norfolk from May 2027: no nonstop flight from Montréal, so a connection is mandatory, or roughly thirteen hours of driving. Norfolk is the least convenient of the four home ports.
A Canadian passport valid at least six months beyond the end of the trip, which is stricter than for Bahamas cruises. The August 2026 transatlantic calls at Tangier, Morocco — Morocco replaced Gibraltar on the itinerary — which adds a non-Schengen entry. Confirm the requirements in force on your sailing date with your travel counsellor.
Better than its sisters. Freedom has 45 adapted staterooms, against 26 on Glory and 27 on Valor, which gives a genuine choice of categories and decks. Elevators serve all public decks. Two obstacles remain: the level breaks on deck 3, which force detours, and tender landings at certain Bermuda and Canada calls.
Yes, and more of it than for a Bahamas cruise. A transatlantic includes several consecutive days with no land nearby: a medical evacuation mid-Atlantic happens by ship or by very long-range helicopter, and costs enormous sums. Check that your policy covers evacuation and repatriation, not just hospital bills, and that it is valid in Europe and Morocco.
Partly. Carnival allows one 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne per adult, at embarkation only, with a corkage fee if you have it served in the dining room. Non-alcoholic drinks are limited to sealed cans or cartons in restricted quantity, in carry-on baggage. All beer and spirits are confiscated at embarkation and returned at disembarkation.
They are two separate private destinations. Celebration Key, opened July 19, 2025, at Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, is heavily developed, with a solid pier, a very large lagoon pool and themed zones. RelaxAway Half Moon Cay is the older private island, wilder and beach-focused; it has been under expansion with a new pier since 2026. Several Freedom itineraries combine both.
