Carnival Horizon: what to know before you book
The Carnival Horizon is a 133,500-gross-ton Vista-class ship, delivered by Fincantieri at Marghera in spring 2018 and christened in New York on 23 May 2018 by Queen Latifah. She measures roughly 322 metres by 37, carries 3,960 guests at double occupancy — up to 4,977 when every berth is filled — and sails with 1,450 crew. Based in Miami since September 2018, she moves to Galveston, Texas, on 19 May 2027. This is a busy family ship, built for sea days rather than for quiet.
The 2027 home port change: read this before booking
Through spring 2027, the Carnival Horizon sails from Miami on 6- and 8-day Caribbean cruises. From 19 May 2027 she becomes a Galveston ship — a first for her — with more than 70 departures of 4 and 5 days to the Western Caribbean, running through April 2028.
That changes your planning entirely. Miami is a three-and-a-half-hour nonstop flight from Montreal, with the terminal fifteen minutes from the airport. Galveston means flying into Houston and driving about an hour. If you are booking for 2027, confirm your sailing date before you buy anything else.
Who this ship suits
Families first. The Dr. Seuss WaterWorks park uses the colours and characters from the books, and Dr. Seuss Bookville is a reading space built for small children, open at no charge. The Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast does carry a fee and needs a reservation — spots go the moment you board.
Couples too, provided you know where to hide. The Serenity deck is restricted to guests 18 and over, the Cloud 9 Spa spans two decks with a thermal suite, saunas and heated loungers, and the Havana section has a pool reserved for its guests until evening. Outside those areas, the ship is loud and firmly family territory.
What the Carnival Horizon has that others don't
An IMAX theatre, inherited from the Carnival Vista, which introduced it in 2016. It is one of the few features separating Vista-class ships from the rest of Carnival's fleet. Screenings carry a fee and the schedule appears in the Hub app.
SkyRide, the suspended dual-track course where you pedal above the top deck, is included in your fare. The line is shortest early in the morning.
The ship came out of dry dock on 14 June 2026 after five weeks of technical maintenance, classification inspections and interior refreshes. Carnival has not published a final list of new venues. If you are booking around a specific restaurant, have it confirmed rather than trusting an older ship page.
Dining
The main dining rooms, the buffet, Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina are included. Guy's Pig & Anchor smokehouse serves breakfast and lunch at no charge, but only on embarkation day and sea days — which is why many guests miss it entirely. Dinner in the same room, with table service, carries a fee, as do the steakhouse and the Asian venues.
What disappoints
The Lido deck on sea days. Nearly 4,000 guests on a layout designed in the late 2010s means loungers claimed by 7 a.m. and a full main pool by mid-morning. On port days the deck empties and becomes genuinely pleasant.
The gap between 3,960 and 4,977 guests is noticeable as well. A spring break sailing feels nothing like a September departure, and the crew count stays the same either way.
Cabins and booking
The scarce categories — Havana, Family Harbor, accessible and connecting cabins — sell out long before the ship does. Allow nine to fourteen months for spring break, Easter and the holidays. For the first Galveston season starting in May 2027, book early: inaugural sailings from a new home port draw heavy local demand.
The ship has accessible cabins across several categories, with widened doors and roll-in showers, but there are few of them. Not every Caribbean port is accessible either — some require a tender transfer, which is not possible in a wheelchair. Submit Carnival's special needs form when you book.
One deadline worth acting on
Carnival Rewards replaces the line's former loyalty program on 1 September 2026. Existing status does not transfer automatically: you must enrol in the new program before that date to keep it. If you have been sailing with Carnival for years, do it now.
Two ships worth comparing before you settle on a date
The Carnival Panorama completes the Vista class but works the Pacific, sailing from Long Beach to the Mexican Riviera, and she received the Sky Zone trampoline park rather than a large-format cinema. The Carnival Breeze holds Galveston today with 4- and 5-day runs and switches to 7-day sailings in May 2027, exactly when Horizon arrives. The two ships all but trade places.
Book with an advisor
A Voyages AquaTerra travel advisor confirms your itinerary, your departure port and your cabin category before you buy flights. On a ship changing coasts in 2027, that check is what prevents expensive surprises. Call 1-866-628-6241.
