Carnival Vista: Port Canaveral now, not Galveston

The Carnival Vista is the ship that gave an entire class its name. 133,500 gross tons, roughly 322 metres by 37, 3,934 guests at double occupancy, 1,450 crew. Built by Fincantieri at Monfalcone and entering service in May 2016. One point matters if you have sailed her before: she has been based in Port Canaveral, Florida, since November 2023, no longer Galveston. She stays there for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, running 6- to 9-day Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries.

Why Port Canaveral changes things

The port is about an hour from Orlando airport. That makes it the easiest departure for a Quebec traveller combining a cruise with a few days in the theme parks — worth considering before you book a flight to Miami out of habit.

The Carnival Vista's firsts

This ship introduced several things in 2016. SkyRide, the suspended dual-track course where you pedal a hanging pod above the top deck with the sea below you. It is included in your fare at no extra charge, and the line is shortest early in the morning — two people can race side by side on the parallel tracks.

RedFrog Pub & Brewery as well, the first brewery installed aboard a North American cruise ship, with tanks visible from the pub. House beers are not included in your fare. The pub doubles as a small acoustic venue in the evening and fills up fast on sea days.

An honest caveat about the IMAX

The Carnival Vista was the first ship in the world with an IMAX theatre, back in 2016. But her current page on carnival.com no longer lists it, while the Carnival Horizon page still does. The room may have been repurposed during the 2024 refit. Have it confirmed before booking for the IMAX — this is exactly the kind of detail that sours a cruise when you learn it onboard.

She was refitted in 2024

A full refit in January and February 2024 at the Navantia yard in Cádiz: enlarged casino with a non-smoking annex, the new Heroes Tribute Bar, a rebuilt Club O2, a refreshed Lido Marketplace and the red, white and blue livery. One real drawback remains: cabins have no USB ports and no bedside outlets. Bring a non-surge power bar — strips with surge protection are banned onboard.

Vista or Horizon?

They are near-identical sisters: same hull, same length, same crew. Vista carries 3,934 guests at double occupancy, Horizon 3,960. Horizon, delivered two years later, has a slightly more refined layout and the Dr. Seuss WaterWorks area. In 2026 the difference that actually matters to you is the port: Port Canaveral against Miami — and Galveston for Horizon from May 2027.

The Havana section

A Cuban-inspired area aft, with a bar, a pool and whirlpools. The bar is open to everyone, but the pool and whirlpools are reserved for Havana cabin guests until evening. Some of those cabins have a patio with a hammock opening directly onto the sea. It is the quietest corner of the ship on sea days.

What to know about the engines

Better to say it plainly, since it is documented. In 2019, azipod propulsion trouble forced the cancellation of three cruises and a repair in a floating dry dock. The ship also briefly lost propulsion in the Gulf of Mexico that same year, and further issues were reported in 2024. Since the full refit in January 2024, operations have been back to normal.

Which cabins to avoid

The ones all the way forward and all the way aft move more in rough seas. Also avoid cabins under the Lido deck, under a dance floor, or above a show lounge, because sound travels. Midship at mid-height remains the best compromise — and a balcony over an interior if you are prone to seasickness, because seeing the horizon genuinely helps.

With children

Camp Ocean takes ages 2 to 11 in three age groups, Circle C covers 12 to 14 and Club O2 handles 15 to 17, in a space rebuilt in 2024. Add the WaterWorks water park, Dr. Seuss Bookville and SportSquare with its ropes course. Evening babysitting is available, but billed by the hour.

One deadline worth acting on

Carnival Rewards replaces the former loyalty program on 1 September 2026. Existing status does not carry over automatically — you must enrol before that date to keep it.

Two other ships, two other ways to sail

The Carnival Panorama closes the Vista class and remains the only one of the three on the Pacific, at Long Beach, with the Mexican Riviera and the Sky Zone trampoline park in place of a large-format cinema. The Carnival Magic, from the previous class, sails from Miami on 6 and 8 days and owns the Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao loop, but carries neither a Havana section nor SkyRide. Three ships in one fleet that Carnival Cruise Line deploys three different ways.

Book with an advisor

Celebration Key appears on several Vista departures, often paired with Half Moon Cay — but not automatically, and two sailings of the same length can call at different ports. A Voyages AquaTerra travel advisor confirms the exact itinerary for your date. Call 1-866-628-6241.

Yes, but only on some itineraries. Celebration Key, Carnival's private destination on Grand Bahama Island, opened in July 2025 and appears on several Carnival Vista departures from Port Canaveral, often paired with Half Moon Cay. It is not automatic: two sailings of the same length can call at different ports. Check the exact itinerary for your date.
For a Canadian boarding at Port Canaveral, yes in practical terms. A valid passport is the only document that lets you fly home if you have to leave the ship in a foreign port, for a medical emergency for instance. Add the US electronic travel authorization or visa as your situation requires. Some round-trip sailings accept other documents, but no serious advisor recommends it.
Casual most nights in the main dining room: long pants with a shirt or polo, a dress or smart daywear. One or two Elegant nights per cruise invite a jacket or cocktail dress, but neither is required. Shorts, tank tops and swimwear are turned away from the dining room in the evening. The Lido Marketplace buffet stays casual all day.
It depends on what you actually drink. The Cheers! package must be bought for every adult in the same cabin, it caps the number of alcoholic drinks per day, and it excludes bottles of wine and any drink above a set threshold. On an itinerary with several port days, many guests drink less than they expect and never break even.
Reasonably good. At 133,500 tons with stabilizers, the Carnival Vista moves little in the Caribbean from December through April. Pick a midship cabin at mid-height, and choose a balcony over an interior: seeing the horizon genuinely helps. Reviews do still report noticeable motion in the forward and aft cabins when the weather turns.
