A ship that gave up berths to gain room

Crystal Serenity left Chantiers de l'Atlantique at Saint-Nazaire on 30 June 2003, having been launched on 10 August 2002. Two hundred and fifty metres, 68,870 gross tons, thirteen decks of which nine are open to guests. She was drawn for 1,040 people. She carries 740 today, with 655 crew. Those three hundred lost berths are the essential thing to understand about this ship: the space they took up became suites, lounges and decks where nobody queues.

Two refits explain the figure. Lloyd Werft, in Bremerhaven, brought capacity from 1,040 down to 980 in 2018. Fincantieri, in Trieste, brought it to 740 during the twenty months the ship sat still after the 2022 bankruptcy. She sailed again on 31 July 2023 out of Marseille. The line's own page tells that bankruptcy in full, because it also explains why seven other pages on this site describe ships that are no longer here.

What the fare covers

This line's fare follows a pattern no other in our catalogue copies outright. Gratuities are in. So are premium wines, spirits and beer, in every restaurant and every bar, at any hour. Every suite has its butler, with no exception and no reserved category. Suite service runs twenty-four hours a day. Speciality restaurants come with an allotment of reservations set by voyage length: one up to eleven days, two from twelve to twenty-two, three from twenty-three. Beyond that, a supplement applies.

What the calendar says

One hundred and thirty-eight departures are on sale on this page as we write: twenty-five in 2026, sixty-seven in 2027, forty-six in 2028. Lengths run from four to one hundred and thirty-nine days, and eight days comes up most often. Fort Lauderdale appears twenty-five times, Barcelona thirteen, New York twelve, Lisbon and San Juan eleven each. The 139-day world cruise splits into segments of 71 and 72 days for those without four months to spare.

Three autumn 2027 departures call at Québec City: New York to Québec in eleven days on 10 September, a round trip from Québec on 21 September, then Québec to New York on 2 October. For a ship that spends most of its year elsewhere, that is a narrow window. Her sister, Crystal Symphony, stops at Montréal six times.

What we do not know

Here is what we will not say, for want of having checked it. The line's own inclusions page names neither Wi-Fi nor shore excursions. Third parties state that Wi-Fi is included. We do not take that up as our own: ask for it in writing before you pay. We have not obtained the current ticket contract either, so we assert nothing about arbitration or claim deadlines. The number of wheelchair-adapted cabins is published nowhere for these ships. Crystal Grace arrives in 2028 and her page is already selling; the fourth ship of the fleet as it then was, meanwhile, left for another owner in 2022, and its page now says where.

On 4 February 2022, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony were arrested at Freeport, in the Bahamas, over roughly 4.6 million US dollars of unpaid fuel. The line had suspended operations days earlier. On 11 February it filed an assignment for the benefit of creditors in Florida; on the 14th its 238 shoreside staff in Miami lost their jobs. A&K Travel Group took the brand and the two ocean ships at judicial auction in June 2022.
