A ship that gave up berths to gain room

Crystal Symphony was delivered by Kværner Masa-Yards, at Turku in Finland, on 18 April 1995. Two hundred and thirty-eight metres, 51,044 gross tons, twelve decks of which eight are open to guests, 310 suites. She was drawn for 922 people and carries 606, with 530 crew. Three hundred and sixteen berths removed, sixteen more than her sister, and it shows in the corridors as much as in the dining rooms.

This ship lived the bankruptcy closer than her sister. In January 2022 an American arrest warrant caught up with her at sea. She turned for Bimini, in the Bahamas, to land her guests and send them home to the United States another way. On 4 February both ships were arrested at Freeport over 4.6 million US dollars of unpaid fuel. The line's own page tells what followed: the June 2022 auction, the purchase by the Abercrombie & Kent group, the twenty months of silence.

What the fare covers

This line's fare follows a pattern no other in our catalogue copies outright. Gratuities are in. So are premium wines, spirits and beer, in every restaurant and every bar, at any hour. Every suite has its butler, with no exception and no reserved category. Suite service runs twenty-four hours a day. Speciality restaurants come with an allotment of reservations set by voyage length: one up to eleven days, two from twelve to twenty-two, three from twenty-three. Beyond that, a supplement applies.

What the calendar says

One hundred and twenty-eight departures are on sale on this page: twenty-three in 2026, sixty in 2027, forty-two in 2028 and three in 2029. Lengths run from four to one hundred and fifty-one days, and eight days comes up most often. Fort Lauderdale appears twenty-seven times, Lisbon eighteen, Barcelona fourteen, then San Juan, Civitavecchia, Melbourne and Vancouver eleven times each. The world cruise runs 151 days, out of and back to Fort Lauderdale.

Six departures call at Montréal, which stays rare for a ship this size and is worth noting here. Her sister, Crystal Serenity, prefers Québec City, three times in autumn 2027.

What we do not know

Here is what we will not say, for want of having checked it. The line's own inclusions page names neither Wi-Fi nor shore excursions. Third parties state that Wi-Fi is included. We do not take that up as our own: ask for it in writing before you pay. We have not obtained the current ticket contract either, so we assert nothing about arbitration or claim deadlines. The number of wheelchair-adapted cabins is published nowhere for these ships. Crystal Grace arrives in 2028 and her page is already selling; the fourth ship of the fleet as it then was, meanwhile, left for another owner in 2022, and its page now says where.
