She measures 145,655 gross tons, 325.6 metres long and 39.7 metres wide on the registry, across 18 decks with 14 open to guests. Delivered by Meyer Werft at Papenburg on 25 April 2013, she is the first hull of the Breakaway class and carries 2,014 cabins with a crew of 1,657. Her hull wears artwork by Peter Max, a coloured New York skyline left over from her Manhattan terminal years. She is slightly smaller than Norwegian Epic, from which she nonetheless directly descends.
Norwegian publishes 3,903 at double occupancy, CruiseMapper counts 3,963, and maximum capacity reaches 4,819 once every pull-down berth is in use. Nearly nine hundred people separate the headline figure from the reality of a school-break week or a July Bermuda run. The ship's space ratio is 30, respectable for her generation but below the newer Prima-class ships. Always compare maximum capacities between two ships, never double occupancy.
They are genuine sisters a year apart, but the 19 February to 14 March 2025 dry dock opened a real gap. Breakaway gained Silver Screen Bistro, where you eat from oversized recliners in front of a film, the open-air Horizon Park with its stage and 360-degree views, and The Stadium with its complimentary outdoor games. At the same time Moderno Churrascaria gave way to Cagney's and Ocean Blue became Palomar, while the Vibe Beach Club and the Haven sundeck were both enlarged. Getaway received none of this and still carries Ocean Blue and Moderno.
She is based in Boston, having become in April 2026 the largest Norwegian ship to run regular turnarounds there. From August to mid-October she runs seven-night Canada and New England loops with Bar Harbor, Halifax, Saint John and Portland, then switches to Bermuda from 18 October, with an overnight at the Royal Naval Dockyard and a Halifax call. On 8 November 2026 she leaves Boston on a repositioning to New Orleans. Her Caribbean season opens on 22 November 2026 from New Orleans, with Cozumel, Roatán, Harvest Caye and Costa Maya.
She stays in New Orleans through 28 March 2027, then works north to Boston on 4 April on a 14-night sailing by way of Grand Cayman, Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire. The Boston season restarts on 18 April 2027 with seven-night Bermuda runs departing Sundays, and Canada and New England returns from 29 August to 17 October 2027, calling at Eastport, Halifax, Sydney in Nova Scotia, Portland and Saint John. From November 2027 she moves down to Port Canaveral. For a Québec traveller, the Boston season is a logistical gift: a nonstop flight of about 1 h 30 from Montréal, or close to five and a half hours by road via Autoroute 10 and Interstate 93. New Orleans, by contrast, has no nonstop service from Montréal and requires a connection through Toronto, Nashville or another American hub, roughly 4 h 30 in total.
A midship balcony on decks 9 through 11 remains the default answer, and the deck 14 spa cabins, 36 balconies and 20 mini-suites, add thermal suite access without going to The Haven. The 42 Haven suites on decks 15 and 16 sell quickly because there are so few of them for a ship this size. A solo traveller will find 59 studios forward on decks 10 and 11 with the Studio Lounge alongside, a direct inheritance from Norwegian Epic. Be wary of the most forward cabins during a Bermuda season, when the Gulf Stream makes itself known in autumn.
It is the Breakaway class's great invention, absent from Norwegian Epic: an outdoor promenade of roughly four hundred metres wrapping the ship on deck 8, lined with restaurants and bars that open straight onto the sea. On Breakaway you will find Cagney's, Palomar, La Cucina, the Sugarcane Mojito Bar, Syd Norman's Pour House with its live rock, and Dolce Gelato. The tables sit outside, a few metres above the water, which transforms an evening compared with an enclosed pool deck. Elsewhere aboard: Silver Screen Bistro, Horizon Park, Vibe Beach Club, the Arctic Ice Bar, the Humidor Cigar Lounge, the Aqua Park, the ropes course and mini-golf.
The ship is dense: at close to 4,800 people at peak, the buffet, the elevators and the ropes course all queue. Standard cabins are small, a balcony running around fifteen square metres including the balcony itself, and The Haven holds only 42 suites, so it sells out months ahead. The Waterfront promenade, glorious in the Caribbean, turns windy and cold on an October Canada and New England loop, which no brochure ever mentions. Regulars also miss Moderno Churrascaria and Ocean Blue, replaced in March 2025 by Cagney's and Palomar.
Meals at the Manhattan Room, Savor, Taste, the Garden Café and O'Sheehan's are included with no set time or assigned table, along with drip coffee, tea, shows at the Breakaway Theater, the Aqua Park, the ropes course, Horizon Park, The Stadium and the Pulse fitness centre. Extra charges apply at Cagney's, Palomar, La Cucina, Le Bistro, Teppanyaki and Silver Screen Bistro, plus alcohol, Starbucks, the spa thermal suite, mini-golf, shore excursions, Wi-Fi and the daily service charges. On a Canada and New England loop, also plan on booking Bar Harbor and Saint John excursions early in autumn. Have an advisor work out the real total at 1-866-628-6241.
They are not. Norwegian posts a daily per-person service charge to your onboard account, at a higher rate if you are in one of the 42 Haven suites. It applies from age three and can be settled before departure. Separate service charges apply to every drink at Sugarcane or the Arctic Ice Bar, every meal at Cagney's or Palomar, and every treatment at the Mandara spa.
The open bar comes with the Free at Sea promotion, but it triggers a mandatory daily service charge for every guest aged 21 and over on the booking. Two adults sharing a balcony each pay their own, across the seven nights of a Bermuda run just as across the fourteen of a repositioning. Premium pours above a set value, bottles of wine and the minibar stay separately billed. The upper tier adds specialty coffees served in the restaurants, useful on a ship where Starbucks is otherwise a charge.
Yes, by satellite, with Starlink rolled out across the fleet. A limited allotment of minutes usually comes with the current promotion; beyond that you buy a package, and only the top tier supports streaming. Coverage is good along the East Coast and around Bermuda, patchier in the Gulf of Mexico out of New Orleans. One device at a time unless you add the multi-device option.
Very well, and more so since March 2025. Splash Academy covers ages 3 to 12, Entourage ages 13 to 17, Guppies gives parent-supervised play from 6 months to 3 years, and the ship offers the Aqua Park, a three-storey ropes course, mini-golf and now The Stadium with its complimentary outdoor games. Silver Screen Bistro, where you eat in front of a film from oversized recliners, lands especially well with school-age children. Note that mini-golf, the arcade and evening childcare all carry charges, and that the Breakaway class has neither go-karts nor simulators, unlike the newer ships.
Yes. Every night aboard earns one Latitudes point, and Haven nights earn double. Seven tiers run from Bronze to Ambassador, and the perks that matter start at Gold and Platinum, with priority embarkation, a laundry bag, a specialty dinner with wine and earlier dining reservations. Early booking is worth real money on this ship, since tables at Palomar and Silver Screen Bistro go within hours of reservations opening. The 14-night repositioning of 4 April 2027 is also an efficient way to bank points.
The ship is stable; her itineraries are not all equally so. The crossing to Bermuda cuts the Gulf Stream and can move in autumn, and the Canada and New England loop follows a coast exposed to the remnants of tropical storms from late August to mid-October. Caribbean sailings out of New Orleans are markedly calmer. Choose a midship cabin on a lower deck rather than a forward suite on deck 15, and pack tablets or patches.
