At the capital itself, split into two bays by a volcanic crag crowned with ramparts. On one side Romeikos Gialos with its neoclassical houses, on the other Tourkikos Gialos with its fishing boats.
The climb to the kastro in the morning, about half an hour of effort, then the market street locals call the agora, and a swim at Romeikos Gialos or Richa Nera. It is all on foot.
It takes about half an hour from the streets of the centre, between prickly pears and sun-warmed stone, up to 114 metres above the water. The reward outweighs the effort: the two bays spread out on either side.
A castle built in the twelfth century under the Byzantine emperor Comnenus, later strengthened by the Venetians, its walls spread across a broad rocky headland. It is one of the finest viewpoints on the island.
The market street, a paved artery linking the two shores past fragrant bakeries, cafes where people play tavli, craft shops and stalls of island produce. It is the town's backbone.
The sandy beach at Romeikos Gialos, with shallow water, suits families, and the kastro makes the backdrop for photographs. Richa Nera and Plati, minutes away, offer umbrellas and beach cafes.
Romeikos Gialos, lined with bourgeois facades and cafes with a view, invites a late-afternoon stroll. Tourkikos Gialos, the old Ottoman anchorage, holds the maritime life: spread nets, painted caiques, octopus drying in the sun.
A jar of thyme honey, a local cheese or a bottle from grape varieties grown here for millennia. The island has cultivated wheat, vines and honey since antiquity, and sellers gladly tell the story of their products.
Not very, and that is its charm. No queues and no shops identical from one end of Greece to the other: shopkeepers who greet you, fishermen mending nets, an island capital that stayed itself.
