In the commercial port, with no dedicated terminal. Walking there is prohibited: a shuttle takes passengers to the gate, where taxis and excursion coaches wait. Plan your day before going ashore, because nothing can be improvised at the quayside.
Because the city is one of the largest bunkering ports in the world. Dozens of tankers wait at anchor, and that procession of giants is part of the landscape. It also explains the industrial nature of the berth where you land.
Its geography. It is the only emirate facing entirely onto the Gulf of Oman, away from the Persian Gulf, backed against the Hajar mountains. Bare, rust-coloured peaks drop almost into the sea, far from the excess of Dubai.
Fujairah fort and museum, ten minutes by taxi, then Khor Fakkan and its corniche half an hour's drive away. That is the best-balanced plan. If swimming is the priority, head straight for the beaches of Al Aqah, three quarters of an hour away.
One of the oldest in the Emirates, set on a knoll among palm groves about ten minutes from the port. Its carefully restored stone and mud walls overlook the remains of the old village. The neighbouring museum displays regional finds, from Bronze Age pottery to traditional weapons.
The oldest mosque in the Emirates, about 40 minutes' drive north: a small building of stone and clay topped by four domes. You visit it modestly dressed, with local guides, and are struck by how cool its low rooms stay at midday.
At the beaches of Al Aqah, about three quarters of an hour away, where swimming combines well with mask and snorkel. Khor Fakkan, half an hour off, offers a closer beach with its corniche and amphitheatre. Both justify the trip, but not on the same day.
Reasonable, which is a pleasant surprise. The attractions are scattered along the coast and inland, but the roads are excellent and the traffic far lighter than on the country's west coast. Half an hour's drive here is worth an hour in Dubai.
More modestly than in Dubai. Fujairah is a more traditional emirate: shoulders and knees covered in town and at the sites, and strict dress to enter mosques, Al Bidya included. Swimwear stays on the beaches and at hotels.
The UAE dirham, with some cash for taxis and site tickets. As for season, November to March: summer on the Gulf of Oman is crushing, and the bare mountains that make the emirate beautiful offer not a scrap of shade.
