Spectrum of the Seas: 127 departures, all of them in Asia

Our 127 departures on Spectrum of the Seas split between Shanghai (86) and Hong Kong (29), the rest in the same region. No other Royal Caribbean ship in our catalogue has all of her embarkations in Asia.

That is not a calendar detail, it is the ship's identity. Spectrum was designed and deployed for the Asian market, and her interior configuration follows that choice. For a Montreal traveller it means a long-haul flight with at least one connection, and twelve hours of jet lag to absorb.

Quantum Ultra, not Quantum

Spectrum introduced the Quantum Ultra variant. The gap with the original Quantum class is measurable: 169,379 gross tons against 168,666, and 4,246 guests at double occupancy against 4,180. Sixty-six more berths, 713 more tons.

Those figures look thin, and they are. The real difference lies in interior layout rather than volume. A client hesitating between Spectrum and Ovation of the Seas is not choosing between two sizes, they are choosing between two regions of the world.

The measurements

Delivered in 2019 by the Meyer Werft yard at Papenburg, Germany, Spectrum measures 347.11 metres and has 16 decks, 14 of them accessible to guests. Maximum capacity reaches 4,905 guests.

Her crew complement is not published by a source we consider reliable. We therefore do not calculate her guest-to-crew ratio. As a measured benchmark across the fleet, the known spread runs from 2.38 to 3.00, and Quantum of the Seas sits at 2.79.

What Shanghai and Hong Kong imply

The 86 Shanghai departures mostly target Japan and Korea on short sailings. The 29 from Hong Kong open up Vietnam and the Philippines. Two markets, two seasons, one ship.

For a Quebec client, an Asian cruise rarely sells on its own. It combines with a land stay, otherwise the ratio between travel time and time aboard turns unfavourable. The airport-to-pier transfer is never included by default and is arranged separately, which counts for even more when you arrive after twenty hours of travel.

What 347 metres mean underfoot

Across 14 accessible decks and 347.11 metres of length, the stateroom's position relative to the lifts weighs more than the deck number. Over seven days, the gap between a well placed cabin and one at the far end is measured in tens of minutes of walking per person.

To place the scale within the fleet: Spectrum takes 4,246 guests, Grandeur of the Seas 1,992. A factor of 2.1 between two ships of the same company, on hulls of 347 and 279 metres.

Who she suits

Travellers already drawn to Asia, who want a comfortable floating base rather than a succession of hotels. A first cruise is better taken closer to home: Utopia of the Seas offers 171 dates from Port Canaveral, with no jet lag.

Our Royal Caribbean advisors confirm the exact fare, inclusions and applicable conditions before any booking, in line with Quebec consumer protection rules.

It is strongly recommended. Without an added stay, the ratio between travel time and time aboard turns unfavourable for a traveller leaving Montreal.
Less well. A first cruise is better taken closer to home: Utopia of the Seas offers 171 dates from Port Canaveral, with no jet lag and no long-haul flight.
Sixty-six berths and 713 tons, so almost nothing. The real difference is deployment: Ovation sails from Los Angeles for 157 of her 161 departures, Spectrum from Asia for all of hers.
