Two countries, two sets of formalities, one cruise
Mekong Jewel sails between Vietnam and Cambodia. That administrative detail
is the first thing to settle, before you even choose a cabin. You cross an
international border on the water, with the formalities that go with it, and the
two countries' requirements move independently of each other. Your advisor
checks what applies on your departure date rather than what applied last
year.
Allow margin on the way out as well. The journey from Montreal to Hanoi or Ho
Chi Minh City involves two connections and a good twenty hours of travel, with
twelve hours of time difference. Nobody boards fresh after that.
The hull
Eighty metres, 68 guests, 51 crew. The ship was built in Vietnam and entered
service in 2020. All 34 accommodations are suites, including two very large
Royal Suites. Pool, spa, sauna, steam room, fitness room.
Uniworld notes that this ship is operated for the line rather than owned by
it, and that the offering may differ from the European ships. It replaced Mekong
Navigator, and a sister is announced for 2028.
Uniworld doubles its presence on the river in 2028 with the Mekong Mystique, a 79.8-metre ship that also carries 68 guests, with 51 crew and 34 suites from 32 to 82.6 square metres in a 1930s Indochine style. If your dates are flexible, compare the two before choosing.
What the Mekong gives
The delta is a country made of water: floating markets, puffed rice
workshops, children waving from sampans. In Cambodia the river leads towards
Phnom Penh and, depending on the season and the water level, towards the Tonle
Sap lake. The heat is constant and so is the humidity.
Butler service is not offered in Asia, despite the name of the
accommodation. Gratuities, on the other hand, are covered aboard and ashore.
In India, look at Ganges Voyager II. On the Nile, River Tosca and S.S. Sphinx. And for a European cruise of a
different kind, S.S. La Venezia in the Venetian lagoon.
What is included, and what is not
Start with the part that surprises people: shipboard gratuities are already
covered. You do not end the cruise with a list of envelopes to prepare. Meals
follow, with a selection of wines, beers and spirits available through the day.
Scheduled excursions and the transfers in your file are included.
Wi-Fi is provided aboard as a courtesy. Uniworld guarantees neither
availability nor speed, and losing the signal in a lock is normal rather than
exceptional.
You pay separately for airfare, visas, travel insurance, laundry, spa,
communications and optional excursions.
Inclusions differ outside Europe. Uniworld says so in its
own terms: on the Nile, in India, in Southeast Asia and in Peru, the package is
not the one that applies to the European ships. Have your specific departure
checked before you book, because the gap shows up as disappointment.
Moving around aboard and ashore
The line promises reasonable efforts without guaranteeing accessibility. No
mobility equipment is provided aboard. A traveller who needs assistance must
sail with someone who can genuinely provide it, not merely in principle.
Ashore, historic centres are cobbled and not every quay is fitted out. Have the
exact configuration of your chosen ship confirmed.
Leaving from Quebec
The time difference works against you outbound and for you on the way home.
An evening departure from Montreal lands you in Europe in the morning, with a
full day ahead and a broken night behind. Advisors who know these itineraries
book a hotel night before embarkation almost every time.
