Two things the brochure does not say plainly
First: Uniworld notes on its own page that this ship is not owned by the line
and that the offering may differ from the rest of the fleet. Some third-party
databases claim the opposite. We will not settle a question of ownership the
line itself leaves open, so let us simply say the ship is operated under the
Uniworld brand with a caveat written in black and white.
Second: butler service does not exist in Egypt. Your accommodation is called
a suite, and it genuinely is one, but the personal attention that word carries
in Europe does not follow. A traveller who has sailed the Rhine and expects to
find it again on the Nile will be disappointed by a difference they could have
known about beforehand.
The hull
Seventy-two metres long and nearly fifteen wide, 84 guests, 60 crew. Out of
the Maasara yard in Cairo in 2021. Five decks, 42 suites including four Royal
Suites, all with French balconies. Pool, massage room and two restaurants.
The furniture is hand carved and the textiles are Egyptian. The ship is newer
than its fleetmate on the same river, and that shows most in the bathrooms and
the insulation.
On the Nile
The standard itinerary runs twelve days round trip from Cairo, with the
sailing between Luxor and Aswan. The river section is short in distance and
dense with visits: Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae.
River Tosca is the line's other Nile ship. In Asia, look at Ganges Voyager II and Mekong Jewel. For a small
European river hull, S.S. Sao Gabriel stands the comparison.
What the package contains
Shipboard gratuities included. Meals included. A selection of wines, beers
and spirits served through the day. Scheduled excursions and the transfers in
your file included. Bicycles, walking poles and onboard fitness sessions
included as well.
Wi-Fi comes as a courtesy and without guarantee. It weakens in locks and
vanishes on some stretches. If you need to stay reachable for work, arrange
something that does not depend on the ship.
Not included: airfare, visas, travel insurance, laundry, spa treatments,
communication charges and optional excursions.
Inclusions differ outside Europe. Uniworld says so in its
own terms: on the Nile, in India, in Southeast Asia and in Peru, the package is
not the one that applies to the European ships. Have your specific departure
checked before you book, because the gap shows up as disappointment.
Accessibility: what the contract actually says
Reasonable efforts, with no guarantee of full accessibility. No mobility
equipment supplied. A companion able to assist is required for any traveller who
needs help. Add a gangway whose slope varies with the water level and excursions
that often run over cobblestones. The question of a lift belongs to each ship
individually and deserves a written answer before you pay a deposit.
From Montreal
Allow a full day in transit outbound. Evening flights to Europe arrive the
following morning, and the body takes two or three days to settle into the new
time zone. A hotel night before embarkation turns a ragged arrival into a clean
start.
Voyages AquaTerra operates under a licence from Quebec's Office de la
protection du consommateur. Funds are held in the trust account required by the
Travel Agents Act, and the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents
covers your booking. These protections are written down, not merely claimed.
