Viking Beyla: 155 departures to the town where Europe split in two
Measured on 25 August 2026: 104 departures from Děčín to Lutherstadt Wittenberg and 51 the reverse, out of 155 in total.
Wittenberg, 31 October 1517
Martin Luther was teaching theology in this small Saxon town when he drew up 95 theses against the sale of indulgences. Tradition has him nailing them to the door of All Saints' Church; historians doubt it, but we know he sent them to his archbishop that day.
The text is in Latin, meant for a debate among academics. It is translated into German, printed, and circulates across the Holy Roman Empire within weeks. It is the first time a religious controversy escapes entirely the control of those who started it, and Gutenberg's printing press, sixty years old, is the direct cause.
The town has officially carried the name Lutherstadt Wittenberg since 1938. Luther's house, All Saints' Church and St Mary's, where he preached, have been World Heritage sites since 1996.
The Elbe, and its real risk
This needs saying, because it is sharper here than elsewhere. The Elbe is the European navigable river most exposed to low water: it is neither engineered nor regulated like the Rhine, and its flow depends directly on rainfall in Bohemia.
The ships of this class are designed with a very shallow draught for exactly that reason. Even so, itinerary modifications — a stretch replaced by coach, a ship swap — are more frequent on the Elbe than on the Rhine or the Danube.
That is not a reason to give up: it is a reason to read the itinerary-modification clause before signing, and to hold insurance covering committed costs.
The hull: Elbe class, 98 berths
She is not a Longship. The two Elbe ships measure about 110 metres and carry 98 guests to 33 crew. That is the smallest capacity in Viking's European river fleet after the Douro's.
One crew member for every 2.97 guests, a tighter ratio than a Rhine Longship's. Each class in the fleet has its own: there is no single figure for « river cruising ».
The shallow draught is not a comfort choice. On the Elbe it is the condition on which the service exists at all.
Viking Astrild is her sister ship, with 152 departures. On the Rhine, where the low-water risk is smaller, Viking Kara offers 151.
Beyla, the bee
Beyla is Freyr's servant, mentioned once in the Poetic Edda, during a banquet where Loki insults her. Her name is probably linked to the bee or to honey, which would attach her to mead — the drink that makes a poet.
Getting there from Montreal
